2 Enrollment on Long Island 2005 - 2011  Long Island: declined 4.2 %  West Hempstead SD: declined 8.6 % (204 students) 2011 – 2014  Long Island: additional 3.4 % decrease  West Hempstead SD: 3.8 % decrease (83 students)

8 Other Factors Housing  Sales have plummeted on Long Island  New construction has stalled  Values have decreased Non-Public Enrollment:  Nassau County: declined to 13.8%  West Hempstead: has been stable – 38.9% in 2011

9 West Hempstead UFSD Other Demographics Age distribution has shifted  fewer in the 0 - 4 (5.7%) and 20 - 54 (46%) age groups - more in the 5 -19 (22.4%) and 55+ (25.8%) age groups Ethnic composition has shifted  White population decreased; increases in all other ethnic groups – largest increase was the Hispanic group,10.4% in 2000 to 17.3% in 2010 Housing sales (between 2003 and 2010)  peaked in 2004 when 226 units sold  87 units were sold in 2010 Public school children per household in 2010  0.42, lower than Nassau County (0.45) % of households with children under 18  decreased from 41.1% in 2000 to 40.3% in 2010 Total occupied housing units decreased between 1990 and 2010  5,530 in 1990 and 5,353 in 2010

10 West Hempstead UFSD Kindergarten and Displacement Between 2001 – 2011:  kindergarten cohorts ranged: 124 (2008) - 167 (2001)  smaller kindergarten replaced larger exiting 12 th grade students in all years  displacement range: between -40 ( 2004) and -121 (2009) Between 2012 – 2021:  kindergarten expected range: 124 (2021) - 133 (2013)  smaller kindergarten groups are expected to replace larger exiting 12 th grade students in all years  displacement expected range: between -50 (2017) and -99 (2013)
