Lesson Objectives To understand the basic hardware of computers, and how they are made up To be able to compare performance of computers with price

Computer Hardware Computer hardware is the physical components that make up the computer. This includes – CPU (Central Processing Unit) – Memory – Input devices – Output Devices

Binary Binary is the number system of computers. Think of it like a light switch, it is either ON or OFF. We show this using the numbers 1 and 0. 1 for on 0 for off

Key Terms Storage Bit 1 bit is the size of a 1 or 0 Byte 1 byes is string of 8 1s or 0s Kilobyte (KB) 1 KB is 1024 bytes Megabyte (MB) 1MB is 1024 KB Gigabyte (GB) 1 GB is 1024 MB Terabyte (TB) 1TB is 1024 GB

Computer Specifications How many of you have bought, or helped your parents buy, a computer or laptop? How many of you have been confused by the specifications of computers? This essentially means the amount of processing circuits/CPUs that can run at one time Cache (“Cash”) memory is built into the CPU and is therefore SUPER fast but SUPER expensive RAM is quick memory which is used to run applications and programs The hard drive is the amount of physical data which can be stored.

Task 1: Use the internet to find the MOST and LEAST expensive computers. Rules: – Desktop computers only – no laptops – May or may not include screen Complete the work sheet. Make sure you compare the features of each

Task 2: Use the internet to find computers for potential clients. Your aim is to find the best value for money. Make sure you shop around, and try different websites.

Homework Produce a 100 word summary on one of the following topics. It MUST be in your own words. Colossus -1943 “Baby” – 1948 John Von Neumann – 1945
