2 3GPP2 Introduction All IP Multimedia Domain –Alignment with 3GPP –Alignment with other standards What next for 3GPP2? Merits of a Common IMS Agenda

3 The Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) is: –A collaborative third generation (3G) telecommunications specifications-setting project –Comprised of interests from the Americas and Asia developing global specifications for MAP “Wireless Radiotelecommunication Intersystem Operations” network evolution to 3G –Focused on global specifications for the radio transmission technologies (RTTs) supported by MAP and the wireless IP core networks, together known as the cdma2000 ® family of standards.

4 Organizational Partners (OPs) ARIBAssociation of Radio Industries and Businesses (Japan) CCSAChina Communications Standard Association (China) TIATelecommunications Industry Association (NAFTA countries: USA, Canada, Mexico) TTATelecommunications Technology Association (Korea) TTCTelecommunication Technology Committee (Japan)

5 Other 3GPP2 Partners Market Representation Partners (MRPs) –CDMA Development Group –IPv6 Forum –IA450 Association –MobileIGNITE Observers –ETSI –TSACC –ITU Individual Members: more than 80 companies

7 MMD Status MMD Publications (X.S0013) –Revision 0 Basic IMS from 3GPP Rel. 5 SIP/SDP procedures Security Offline charging Service architecture –Revision A Based on 3GPP Rel. 6 Enhancements to support services such as – Presence – Conferencing – Push to Talk (PoC)

8 MMD Status (cont.) MMD Publications (X.S0013) –Revision B Based on 3GPP Rel. 6 Optimized call flows Service based bearer control (QoS and charging policy control) Online charging Messaging –Revision C Based on 3GPP Rel. 7 Content in planning stage

9 MMD Status (cont.) Related Specifications –Short Message Service (X.S0016) –Presence Service (X.P0027) –Conferencing Using MMD (X.S0029) –Voice Call Continuity (X.P0042) –SMS Over IMS (X.P0048) –MMD Emergency Services (X.P0049) –Multi-Media Priority Service (X.P0051) –MMD Roaming (X.P0052) –MMD Policy Enhancements (X.P0053) –MMD Supplementary Services (X.Pxxxx)

10 MMD Differences w/3GPP

11 MMD Differences w/3GPP (cont.) Technical Differences –Access Security 3GPP IMS mandates IPsec between UE and P-CSCF for integrity protection 3GPP2 allows for P-CSCF and UE to negotiate other security mechanisms using RFC 3329 (e.g., ipsec-ike, tls, Digest) 3GPP IMS mandates using AKA for authentication between S-CSCF and UE 3GPP2 allows for alternate authentication mechanisms like Digest, (see S.S0086-B) as well as AKA –P-Access-network-Info 3GPP2 UE includes CDMA specific information

12 MMD Differences w/3GPP (cont.) Technical Differences (cont.) –Smart Cards 3GPP IMS terminals require smart cards (SIM/UICC) 3GPP2 does not require smart cards – IMS information can be stored in UE or R-UIM – UICC + ISIM are supported as options –Voice Call Continuity handoff 3GPP assumes dual radio UE 3GPP2 supports both single and dual radios – Single radio for HRPD/1x (VoIP  1x) – Dual radio for WLAN/1x (VoIP  1X)

13 MMD Differences w/3GPP (cont.) Technical Differences (cont.) –Temporary Public/Private Identifiers 3GPP creates temporary IDs for terminals without ISIM 3GPP2 added support for temporary ID in X.S0013-A Methods of generating temporary ID differs – E.212 vs MIN based IMSI –Anchored internet access point 3GPP has GGSN anchored for a given session 3GPP2 allows the PDSN to change during a session –P-CSCF discovery procedures 3GPP supports via DHCP and PDP context activation 3GPP2 supports static configurations and use of DHCP

14 MMD Differences w/3GPP (cont.) Technical Differences (cont.) –Home Subscriber Server (HSS) vs. AAA 3GPP uses HSS for both circuit and packet service 3GPP2 uses AAA + subscriber databases as HSS equivalent for packet service only –MMD supports Enhanced-Proxy-SLF in addition to the Redirect-SLF defined in 3GPP –Support for MIP 3GPP supports MIP v6 3GPP2 supports both MIP v4 and MIP v6

15 Differences with other standards Other standards have similarly used 3GPP IMS as a base (e.g., CableLabs, TISPAN, WiMAX Forum) 3GPP2 uses formal and informal methods to maintain harmonization/interoperability with other forums/technologies –IETF, WiMAX Forum, NENA liaisons –Member company participation across multiple forums 3GPP WLAN Interoperability

16 Differences with other standards Increased industry-wide harmonization has been a hot topic since Fall 2006 –3GPP initiated a study of methods to harmonize industry requirements –3GPP2, among others, participated and provided input how to accomplish common requirements development –3GPP now considering implementation options based on the study results

17 What’s Next Focus of TSG-X in 2007 –Support for UMB! CDG submitted detailed core network support requirements, TSG-X is focusing on the following: – QoS differentiation and policy based QoS – Fast Handoff – Multiple simultaneous IP sessions (v4 and/or v6) – IP mobility for Simple IP terminals – Localized mobility management – On-line, off-line, and service based accounting – Dual IP addressing – SMS over IMS – Voice call continuity and VoIP services – MMD Rev. C

18 Going Forward (cont.) Focus of TSG-X in 2007 –Ongoing support of increased harmonization efforts in the industry As harmonization discussions mature in 3GPP, 3GPP2 will be evaluating our role in those efforts and providing ongoing input as needed
