3 Have you ever been…. Called a name? Hit or harmed? Harrassed? Yelled at? The gossip of the school? Uncomfortable on the internet? Than you have been a victim of bullying.

4 Today we are going to discuss: What bullying is The signs of bullying And how to prevent or stop bullying

5 What is bullying? Types: – Verbal: name-calling, teasing – Social: spreading rumors, leaving people out on purpose, breaking up friendships – Physical: hitting, punching, shoving, knocking out books – Cyberbullying: using the internet, mobile fphones or other digital technologies to harm others.

6 Students: Victims: – Unexplained injuries – Changes in eating habits – Runs away from conflict/home (avoiding places) – Talks about suicide/feels hepless – Suddenly has fewe friends – Complains of headaches or feeling sick – Acts differently than usual Attacker: – Is violent – Gets into fights/or trouble a lot – New belongings without explaniation – Won’ excpet responsibilty, blames ohers quickly – Has friends who bully others – Competivie nature – Has been bullied themself. Can you think of any more warning signs that someone is being bullied or is a bully?

7 Outcomes and Consequences Victims: – High anxiety – Feelings of saddnss – Loss of interest in activities – Increased thoughts about suicide – Decreased academic achievement/drop out or miss – Retalitate through violent measures Attacker: – High risk of abusing alcohol or drugs – Fight more frequently – Vandalize property – Engage in sexual activity – Are more abusive in all relationships – Commit more crimes

8 Statistics As of 2009: – One third of teens have reported being bullied at school. – Only one third of victims actually report the bullying – Females and white students bullied the most – 42% of kids are bullied online – 35% of kids have been threatened – Suicide, the third leading cause of death after accidents and homicides for 15-24 year old.

9 Statistics – 56% of students have witnessed bullying – “As these bullying statistics indicate, bullying is just getting worse in American schools. 10 Educators Our job… – Provide a safe environment – Know school’s prevention program – Track any bullying incidents – Engage parents – Encourage students to report and stand up for each other – Educate students of the types of bullying – Implement school-wide and comprehensive programs (most successful strategies).

11 Families and Communities Everyone can help prevent an stop bullying – Need to be aware of warning signs – Discuss bullying with your children – Educate and support students – Get involved with the school
