2 The Strategic Aims of the Healthy Schools Programme: To support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours To help raise pupil achievement / attainment To help reduce health inequalities To help promote social inclusion

3 What is a Healthy School? A healthy school is one that is successful in helping children to do their best and build on their achievements. It is committed to ongoing improvement and development. It provides a supportive environment, underpinned by health related policies, with time and facilities for physical activity and sport both within and beyond the curriculum Provides comprehensive PSHE including education on relationships, sex, drugs and alcohol as well as issues that can affect young people’s eg emotional difficulties/bereavement

4 4 Schools are asked to identify evidence of activity using a whole school approach and involving the wider school community under these headings: Leadership, Management and managing change Policy development Learning and Teaching, curriculum planning and resourcing including Emotional Health and Well Being, Physical Activity and Food and Nutrition Giving children and young people a voice Partnerships and Support Services

5 Essex Healthy Schools Programme: two stages Foundation Level – allows schools to gain and maintain Healthy Schools status and supports PSHE and SRE agendas Enhanced Level – enables schools to improve the health outcomes for children and young people through a needs led and outcome focused process

6 6 Foundation Level – Schools with Healthy Schools Status Involves a whole school review to confirm provision and ensure healthy school criteria are being maintained Benchmarking tool provides a point of reference – all sections must be evaluated as at least ‘satisfactory’ Schools revalidate every 2 years by submitting the completed benchmarking tool and the signed summary sheet Quality Assurance group and moderation of 10% of schools Process provides the first step in identifying priorities for enhanced healthy schools

7 Foundation Level – Schools without Healthy Schools status Set up a Health and Well Being Group Complete Benchmarking process Develop a plan to address any gaps Be able to evidence Submit to Quality Assurance Group with signed summary sheet

8 Enhanced Level Benchmarking must be up to date Active Health and Well Being group reflecting the school community Substantial development reflecting the health and well being agenda of children and young people Expected to take 1-2 years and reflect a whole school approach Identify 2 Universal and 1 Targeted outcome that reflect the needs of children and young people

9 Cont’d Action developed to address the priority and outcomes Clear baseline established to evidence impact Strategies to support the action plan should reflect evidence based practise Action plan submitted for Quality Assurance Implementation of action plan monitored On completion school submits a school story for Quality Assurance which provides narrative and summarises impact Celebration event
