1 Work Session (1st period only – during teacher training).
Read “Heartbeat” by David Yoo in the Close Reader Workbooks. Students will: Answer questions 1-6 in blue in their workbook while reading the text. After reading: On their own sheet of paper, students will answer the short response on pg. 30 of the workbook (ticket out the door). They are asked to provide a summary of the story “Heartbeat” by answering Who? Where? When? And What?

Your introduction paragraph should include a hook (something to get the readers attention) The information from #1 and #2 on your graphic organizer. A thesis statement where you state your memory. It should be 6-8 sentences in length.

12 Hook Before watching – Students will respond to at least two of the video clips. They will state the moral or lesson learned from the concluding clip. Again, they should do this for at least two clips while watching the video. Watch:

13 Mini-Lesson Share the lessons/morals you wrote down for the two video clips you wrote about with a partner. Class discuss: How did the concluding clips impact the ending of the video? Why should we end with a moral or lesson learned when writing a narrative? (Think about the impact it has on the reader/viewer).

19 Mini-Lesson Using the song lyrics, complete an INSERT. Insert the sense above lyrics that show one of the five sense.

20 Work Session Once your conclusion is complete, you and your partner should swap papers. Now you should…. Edit your partner’s writing (use the chart as a guide). Revise – make suggestions for improvement. Do they need more detail/sensory language? Have they included the three examples of figurative language? Is anything unclear to you, as you read their paper?
