FYI Tuesday 2 nd June – Quiz Theory of natural selection Evidence for evolution (Darwin's studies, Homologous structures, vestigial structures, Fossil record, DNA evidence) Evolution of populations Classification: Taxonomy & cladograms Selective breeding (artificial selection)

Big Questions What are the main lines of evidence that support Darwin’s theory of natural selection? What causes a population’s gene pool to change? What can genes tell us about an organisms evolutionary history? How do evolutionary relationships affect the way scientists classify organisms?

Lesson Goals Discuss and provide examples of the impact selective breeding has had on some species. Explain the role of inherited variation in artificial selection. Construct your own conclusions about the benefits to humans and harmful affects to some species selective breeding has had.

Overview Throughout History people have selectively being breeding domesticated plants and animals to produce offspring with preferred characteristics. This is called selective breeding or artificial selection. Can you provide any examples

Discussion points 1. How do you think American foxhounds first appeared? 2 – Describe some features or abilities that humans may want to breed for in dogs?

Task Groups of 4 You will try and breed a new type of dog for particular traits using existing breeds Your group will use the “dog breeds’ handout and recording your breeds on the “ownership cards”.

Task directions 1. in your groups discuss the types of traits you want your new breed to have and circle the desirable traits. 2. then look at the dog breeds card and begin selecting 2 dog breeds with the breeds that will most likely produce offspring with the traits you need. 3. each group will describe your desired new breed (why you want to make it) and your reasoning for choosing the parents.

4. decide which dog is the male and the female. 5. (remember that offspring gets some traits from the mother and some from the father). You will flip a coin to decide which trait will be passed on. Heads = male, tails = female. 6. Each pair will breed 3 puppies. Flip a coin for each trait for each puppy and record your new puppies traits (and/or draw). 7. display your drawings/descriptions and discuss the variation observed. 8. if you were to make a F2 cross which pups would you choose?

Research Paper Assignment This assignment will be added to your natural selection example paper as unit a project grade

Write an introduction paragraph describing the process of artificial selection in your own words. You can use an example from class (e.g. dogs or horses). Be sure to use and underline the terms in VIST. Research and describe another example of artificial selection or selective breeding in human history (ancient or recent) you are interested in. (provide references to your research and include data tables and graphs where appropriate and images to enhance the appeal of your paper). Conclude your paper with a brief response on your own views of artificial selection and selective breeding (include examples of positives or negatives where appropriate to justify your opinions)
