1 GOOD MORNING! MON. OCT. 5 HW Due Today:  Turn in “Daughter of Invention” Vocabulary Worksheet from Friday.  Save your “Daughter of Invention” paragraph in my S Drive In Box. DMAs Week 6  Begin a new sheet of paper.  Question of the day: Think of a gift you have given or received that was very special. What was the gift? Why was it special or memorable?

2 SHORT STORY UNIT ENDING SOON!  Next Friday we will have the final test over the short story unit.  All work we have done so far will be officially due.  I will not accept any late work after next Friday for this short story unit.

3 LEARNING TARGET/SUCCESS CRITERIA  Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.  I CAN understand challenging vocabulary words in “The Gift of the Magi”  I CAN write sentences that show that I understand these meanings.

4 GIFT OF THE MAGI VOCABULARY  I have sent you an email that has the assignment for the day.  Please open your Outlook Email.  Find the email with the subject “Gift of the Magi”

5 GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON!  Week 6 DMAs  Tuesday, October 6 th DMA #2  What does it mean to sacrifice something? Can you think of story you know where a person sacrificed something for another? It may be true or fiction, from your life or from someone else’s life.

6 GOOD MORNING!  DMAs Week 6  DMA #3 of the week Wed. Oct. 7th  Explain how the ending of “The Gift of the Magi” is ironic.  Irony is a contrast between what is expected and what actually happens.

7 DMA WEEK 6 DMA Question Oct. 8th  Choose one:  Rewrite the ending of “Gift of the Magi.”  OR  Write what happens next after the ending of “Gift of the Magi”  Please take out the “Theme Clues” sheet we were working on yesterday!

8 LEARNING TARGET  Determine a central theme of a text, and analyze in detail it’s development over the course of the text.

10 WHAT IT IS, WHAT IT’S NOT Literary Theme  An observation, a comment, an insight to life or human nature.  Must be expressed in a complete sentence. NOT theme  NOT one word or phrase  NOT a moral  NOT telling you HOW to live or WHAT to do

11 EXAMPLES Theme  Both good and evil live within us.  Jealousy can destroy a person  People have control over their own fates.  Too much ambition can be dangerous NOT theme  Love  Family  Always do the right thing.  Be careful what you wish for.
