Groundwork Prior to Undertaking A Case Study

What is a Case Study  A body of information  Answer questions about its subject matter.  Inquiry  Processes and Systems  Product  Probe what made an initiative click  Success  What about all that did not work – Failures?  Systematic research, analysis and reporting  Answer fundamental questions for replication  Why  How

Therefore….. Devote time to prepare for accurate data gathering and analysis before you begin working on a case study.

Develop Your Research Question  Questions should be  Specific  Analysable by scientific research methods  Framing of questions  Clear  Unambiguous  Keep the local language in mind  Questions should not be  Inherently subjective  Repetitive  Unnecessary

Create your interview  Remember, the interview must be placed in the context of your paper’s background  Do your questions get answered with a Yes or a No  Questions in a statement format are elicit better views  Did you make changes to improve the process?  What changes have been made to improve this process?  Please explain how the current procedure was developed.  Aim to work through a portion of your question  Especially important to interview experts.

Secondary Data and Information  Shares results of other closely related studies  Relates to larger, on-going dialogue on the topic  Provides framework to establish importance of the study  Serves as benchmark  Compares results with other findings

Conduct a Literature Review  Shares results of other closely-related studies  Relates to larger, on-going dialogue in the literature  Provides a framework for establishing its import  Serve as a benchmark

Outline Your Methodology  Outline your research design  Approach to data collection  Analysis  Report writing  Detail the context of the research  Type of organization  Jurisdiction  Indicate how subjects will be selected

Map out the protocol  Strategy and Structure of your Case Study  Create an outline  How you will start at your question  Create bullet points the case study intends answering.  Decide on date collection  Report collection  Internet research  library research  Interviewing scientists or research subjects  Other fieldwork and mapping concepts or typologies  (Using more than one data collection process will add authority and accuracy to your case study.)
