Act 2 Summary

Iago Roderigo Othello Desdemona Emilia – Iago’s wife and Desi’s attendant Cassio

Desi, Cassio, Iago, and Emilia arrive in Cyprus. The war is over. O. has beat the Turks. Iago sees Cassio and Desi interact closely and begins to plot how to get revenge on both. Iago tells Rod. to get Cassio drunk and implies that Cassio and Desi love each other.

Skipped in the film. A herald fills the audience in on the setting change.

Othello Iago Roderigo Cassio Montano – the governor of Cyprus Desdemona (in a quick consummation scene – no lines) Bianca – Venetian courtesan who followed the fleet

Cassio is meant to stand guard as O. and Desi celebrate their wedding night (FINALLY!) Bianca flirts with Cassio. At Iago’s urging, Cassio gets drunk and out of hand. Montano tries to calm down Cassio’s rowdiness. Roderigo, at Iago’s urging, starts a fight with Cassio. Montano tries to break up the fight, gets stabbed by Cassio.

O. arrives, breaks up the fight, and Iago tells him what happened. O. fires Cassio. Cassio is devastated at the loss of his reputation. Iago convinces Cassio to talk to Desi to help win over O., thereby setting up his plot. Iago plans to spin Cassio and Desi’s friendship as an affair, develop O’s jealousy. Rod. asks about the plan, not understanding Iago’s full plan.
