What is our “New Work”? Alaska Standards (ELA & Math) (2012) Replaced the GLE’s Assessments AMP = Alaska Measure of Progress (April 2015) Replacing the SBA Accountability ASPI Score – Replacing AYP ( Fall 2014) Teacher Evaluation System (2014) SLO’s = Student Learning Objectives (2015-16??) Student Growth – it’s the data RTI Plans (2014) Creating, Implementing, Monitoring and Adjusting

Evaluation Quick Facts Evaluation will be on 12 specific Danielson components See the Smart Card Rubrics for each component will make expectations clear Data points (SLO’s) may be included next year. The new system is more about coaching than evaluation “The quality of the coaching conversations is the linchpin of the system”

YKSD Danielson Smart Card

Danielson Domain Quiz Identify the domain that each prompt addresses 1. Ms. A couldn’t verify whether a certain student was absent a few weeks ago. 2. Ms. C had her class watch a video of the “I Have a Dream” speech, then guided them through questions that were factual, interpretive, and analytical in nature. 3. Students in Mr. H’s class are puzzled after he explains “slope” in Algebra. Instead of assigning problems like he had planned, Mr. H tried a different approach in clarifying the content. 4. Mr. B designed a rubric for student projects. It identified key elements of a good project and three levels of performance for each element. 5. Ms. W sends home newsletters with her elementary students that explain what the students will learn this week. 6. The students in Ms. L’s class begin work on a warm-up that is written on the board as soon as they walk in and sit down.

Observation vs. Evaluation They are two different things OBSERVATION – When the principal goes in to watch the teacher teach during a lesson. In YKSD, all teachers have a formal observation twice a year. About 30-45 minutes long Recorded on Observe4success They are for coaching and gathering information EVALUATION – (Summary Evaluation) The final document that summarizes the assessment of the teacher from all year and multiple other sources. (Also on Observe4success) Summary Evaluations have policy and statute regulations attached to them

Summary Evaluation

Observation vs. Evaluation

Evaluation Ratings Review  How do we determine the component ratings?  Principals will refer to the rubrics and use their professional judgment  How do we determine the domain ratings?  The three component scores determines the domain score  How do we determine the overall rating?  The four domain scores determine the overall rating (SLO’s will be a 5 th domain when they are required) ***There are visuals in the next few slides to make this easier to follow

Evaluation Ratings How do we determine component ratings? Principals will refer back to the rubrics.

Evaluation Ratings How do we determine domain ratings?

Evaluation Ratings How do we determine overall ratings?

YKSD Educator Evaluation System Requirements *Two to four valid, reliable measures of student growth including statewide assessments  Observations (district may select a nationally recognized framework approved by the department)  Information from parents, students, etc.  Other information (as determined by the district) Information Sources YKSD Evaluation Components Results & Actions Professional Learning Focus for district & teacher. _______________ Annual Evaluation Alternative for the following school year (as determined by the district) District Support OR Plan of Professional Growth (optional) Plan of Improvement Proficient or higher on 4 standards and basic or higher on 1 standard. ______________ Exceeds the districts performance standards (as determined by the district) Basic on 2 or more standards Unsatisfactory on 1 or more standard Student Learning Objectives Domain 4 – Professional Responsibilities Domain 3 – Instruction Domain 1- Planning And Preparation Domain 2 – Classroom Environment Cultural Standards Performance Rating on each of the four ( 4) components  Unsatisfactory  Basic  Proficient  Exemplary

YKSD Educator Evaluation System Requirements What’s important to know? What questions need to be answered? Go back to Google docs!

Performance Levels What is the difference between Exemplary, Proficient, Basic, Unsatisfactory?

Performance Levels Exemplary, Proficient, Basic, Unsatisfactory Level will be earned for each of the 12 components Your three components in each domain will result in the overall domain score Your four domain scores will generally result in the overall performance level of Exemplary, Proficient, Basic or Unsatisfactory

Performance Levels Let’s look at the every component… Read through the component that is assigned to your school in two slides. In each box, type in the key words or phrases that are used in the rubric that describe each level in your assigned component.

Performance Levels

Performance Levels Assigned Components This should take 4-5 minutes 1c - Setting Instructional Outcomes - Nulato 1e – Designing Coherent Instruction - Ruby 2a – Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport - Koyukuk 2c – Managing Classroom Procedures - Hughes 2d – Managing Student Behavior - Minto 3c – Engaging Students in Learning - Manley 3e – Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness - Allakaket 4b – Maintaining Accurate Records - Kaltag 4c – Communicating with Families – Huslia Secondary 4f – Showing Professionalism – Huslia Elementary

Student Learning Objectives (SLO) SLO’s refer to student data Student growth An SLO is an document that lays out the students included, the time frame, the content area, the test being used, growth targets and corresponding ratings. Each teacher and administrator will need TWO AMP must be used if the teacher teaches ELA or Math We could also use MAP/PMAP May have to come up with other tests May be postponed, but we won’t know until June
