Would you pay for trash?

Energy!

Energy History in the United States What is our main source of energy today? 100 years ago, what was our main source of energy in the United States?

Energy History in the United States 1800’s—Coal was the main American energy source Today, it’s petroleum Coal—Very harmful to the environment, and today we are using more than ever Horrible working conditions in mines Lots of air pollution Runoff contaminates water supplies

How has energy production in the United States changed in the last 30 years?

Energy Production in the United States The United States is producing more natural gas in recent years Fracking Overall energy production is rising! Effects? Coal production is remaining constant Environmental concerns Renewable energy production is not growing much

Renewable vs Nonrenewable Energy Renewable Energy-- Energy sources we will not run out of Nonrenewable Energy—Finite energy sources that we will run out of Globally, renewable energy accounts for 20% of energy for electricity, and 3% of road transport (cars)

What do you notice about global energy production?

Global Energy Production Nonrenewable fossil fuels make up the majority of energy production Oil and coal are the largest sources of energy, then natural gas Renewable energy—Not used much in developing countries (too expensive to set up)

How has global renewable energy production changed in the last 10 years? Renewable energy is showing huge global growth, but only in some developed countries.

What regions consume the most energy? Least?

Global Energy Consumption North America, Western Europe, Australia, and some Middle Eastern countries consume the most energy per person Why? Sub-Saharan Africa and some parts of Southeast Asia has the lowest energy consumption per person (per capita) Why?

Global Energy Consumption

Primary Source of Energy by Region North America—natural gas, oil, and coal Large reserves of fossil fuels, obsession with trucks Europe—Natural gas, nuclear, and renewable energy More environmentally concerned East Asia—Coal Cheap, don’t have oil reserves Southwest Asia—Oil and gas Have huge reserves of fossil fuels Africa—Petroleum and natural gas Oil reserves in Saharan states, Nigeria Australia Who cares?

So… What fuels are the best? What should we use?

Environmental Impact of Different Types of Renewable Energy Wind—Completely clean energy source Geothermal Energy—Getting energy from heat under the Earth’s surface Small amounts of air pollution, but much less than coal or petroleum Biofuels (Biomass, ethanol, biodiesel)—Energy made from plants Big environmental and economic costs of actually growing the food, but they burn cleaner as energy

Ethanol—A fuel created from corn (renewable resource) Creates less pollution than gasoline However, not as efficient as a fuel

Environmental Impact of Different Types of Renewable Energy Hydropower—Using water from dammed up rivers No air pollution, but huge environmental impact Prevents fish migrations, floods areas of land that were previously dry land Solar—Getting energy from the sun’s rays No air or water pollution (except from making the batteries)

Environmental Impacts of Nonrenewable Energy Sources Coal—Huge air, water, and land production Natural Gas and oil—Air pollution, contribution to global warming Oil spills contaminate water and shorelines Nuclear—Getting energy from nuclear reactions Minimal impact, unless there is a spill of nuclear waste (very toxic)

Godzilla!

Deepwater Oil Spill-2012

So… What type of energy do we use to turn on our lights at school?

Review! 1.In the 19 th century, what was the main source of energy for the United States? 2.Identify two sources of energy that have few negative side effects on the earth. 3.Why do you think Europe uses more nuclear and renewable energy than other continents? 4.Do you support the use of biofuel? Why or why not? 5.What connection is there between GDP per capita and the type of energy used in a country? 6.Why do Africa and Southeast Asia use so much coal and petroleum?
