 a.I can describe the big bang theory and the evidence that supports this theory. b. I can describe the nebular theory of solar system formation and the evidence supporting it.

 c. I can explain that the heavy elements found on Earth are formed in stars. d. I can explain how the accepted ideas about the nature of the universe have changed throughout history. e. I can provide an example of how technology has helped scientists investigate the universe. 

Describe how light supports the Big Bang Theory.  Light is used as and evidence for the expanding universe. Spectrums from stars will shift closer to the red when moving away and towards the blue when moving toward us. We can tell this because the spectrum lines are visible.

Describe what Red Shift is and draw an example of a spectrum Red shifted.  Red shift is when an object is moving away from us its unique spectrum shifts towards the red end of visible light.

Which stars would have the greatest red shift? Those closer to us or those farther away explain.  The stars that are father away from us have the greatest red shift typically. Red shift also depends on the speed at which the star is traveling away from us.

Why would a firework be a good model of the Big Bang describe the relationship  The theory of the big bang starts with heat that continues to become hotter until a large explosion. This could be represented by a firework first the fuse is lit the heat is present until it reaches the explosives where it exploded like the big Bang.

Why do scientist accept the theory?  Scientist accept the Big Bang theory because evidence supports the conclusions that have been made. The Big Bang Theory is the best explanation for the evidence that we have on the formation of the universe.

What elements were formed in the Big Bang?  The first elements to be formed after the Big Bang were Hydrogen and Helium Which are the Building blocks of every element.

What are the 3 evidences of the Big Bang Theory?  The Three Evidences are  Red shift of spectral light  Cosmic Background Radiation (radiation left over from a large explosion)  Heavy Elements being form on Stars.

What is a Nebula?  A cloud of Dust and Gas. Nebulas are formed from old stars that have exploded in a supernova. We have direct observation of stars collapsing and forming nebulea

Describe the Nebular Theory and how Solar Systems are formed.  Nebulae spin which creates gravitational forces particle start to attach to one another and they continue to become bigger and bigger until they become the size of a star that creates its own gravity. Planets and other objects such as meteorites found in the solar system are formed in a nebula and are held in place by the gravity of the star.

Why are meteorites the same age and composed of the same material as our Earth?  Meteorites are Created in the same nebulae that have made the planets they surround. Thus they are made from the same material and have the same age as the plants they are around.

Where did the heavy elements that make up our Earth come from?  As stars go through their life cycle, nuclear fusion happens. As the elements start to fuse heavier and heavier elements are created. This is part of star evolution.

What happens to atoms of a star each time it goes through a life cycle?  Atoms continue to fuse elements and the atoms become heavier and heavier as more protons are added in the creation of elements.

Supernova’s produce what kind of elements in the universe?  Supernova’s are the largest stars and the longest living stars. These stars are the stars that produce the heaviest elements known to man.

Why did people believe that the earth was the center of the Solar System? And why was Galileo sent to jail for his ideas of the sun being the center of the Solar system?  Observation with their own eyes told them the sun when up on one side of the earth and down on the other. If the Earth was spinning they thought they would be falling off it. With their knowledge and ability to gather information it was the explanation that made sense to them. Galileo went to jail because, his ideas opposed the cultural and religious practices of his time. 

How has technology increased our knowledge of the Universe?  Through telescopes such as Hubble, which helps us collect accurate data from space. We have microwave receivers, We have discovered the background radiation left over from the big bang.

What is Cosmic Background Radiation and how does it support the Big Bang Theory?  Cosmic background Radiation is the ‘afterglow’ of the big bang, a microwave radiation which still uniformly permeates all of space. It is considered one of the best evidences for the Big Bang Theory.

What does much of the Big Bang Theory depend on?  Much of the Big Bang theory depends on our understanding of the Data that has been collected as evidence. This Data has been collected through technology
