Discernment Discernment – Making Decisions with God

Reflection What was the biggest or most important decision you have ever made? Was it easy or difficult for you to make? Why? What helped you in making the decision? Do you think you made the right decision? Why?

DISCERNMENT  a process through which we are called to make important choices with the guidance and inspiration of God.  involves honesty, trust, courage, and faith.

 requires a belief that, even in the most obviously “non-Religious” matters, God is calling us to a certain way of living and being in the world. What are some choices that you (or people your age) face right now?

How does it work? pray Because this process involves God, we first need to pray. We need to ask God to be with us in this process, and to calm our minds and hearts to the point where we can begin to discern.

Praying to God will help us to believe that: (1)God completely understands us and our present concerns. (2)Each of our lives have a purpose that comes from God (our vocation). (3)God wants to help us make the free choices that will lead us towards fulfilling that purpose during our lives here on earth.

simplify It is best to simplify the choice to 2 options. make a “pro” and “con” list Once you have simplified your choice, make a “pro” and “con” list for each. Do 1 list at a time. Try not to censor yourself – write whatever comes to your mind. evaluate When your lists are complete, evaluate your points. Try not to be distracted by the # of points on either side. Pay attention to your feelings as you evaluate and review your list. Usually, your answer will be clear, if you are open to it.

“visualize” If you are still unsure, try to “visualize” each option. Pay attention to how you feel when you imagine yourself in either situation. Feelings of real peace will accompany a choice that comes from God. Thank God Thank God for helping you through this process. action Put your decision into action.

Keep in mind... 1.Journaling is often helpful. 2.The discernment process can be done in a short period of time, but generally, it’s not good to rush important choices. 3.God has a way of providing helpful information to us, if we look for it with an open heart. 4.God being in this process with us does not guarantee that the decision will be easy to live out.
