Pg 3-14

Summary Chief Bromden is narrator of this story. He one of many patients in a mental hospital run by the vicious big nurse Miz Ratched. the story itself starts out as a normal morning for Bromden; he is mocked by the three black boys, telling him he’s a pushover, also they say chief is deaf and dumb. Even though Bromden pretends he`s dumb, he’s not. Bromden is half Indian. Because he plays this disguise he hears all the secrets and nobody knows he knows. Just then the big nurse as Bromden states rushes into the ward with a gust of cold air. He describes how her lips are an orangey colour like her nails and the bosom is out of proportion on her body. Bromden witnesses the full fury of Miz Ratched as she gets angry at the black boys. Then she suggests getting Bromden shaved.

Then Bromden starts to scream and he hallucinating about manmade fog around him until he was forcefully medicated. During his hallucinations Bromden mentioned how the hospital is more awful than it appears. When Bromden gains consciousness he is in the day room. Bromden discusses how people go on tours at the hospital and make it seem like it’s a happy place. The routine of the day room is interrupted when a new patient arrived named McMurphy. His appearance shows broad shoulders and chest with a baseball cap on his head. McMurphy let out a real loud laugh that gain the patients attention because they hadn`t heard a real laugh in years. McMurphy tells his story about how it was either jail or this place and how he a gambling fool.

Themes: Human freedom vs. control The black boys and Big Nurse manipulate and dominate the patients. Patients have no free will and are punished if doing something out of ordinary. The hospital is not encouraging of them to be individuals but instead group them on how insane they are. “Psychiatric therapy “ is an example of them not having freedom just after a few sessions.

Guided Questions 1.Why do you think that the author used a women as the powerful character? Quote:“She’s going to tear the black bastards limb from limb, she’s so furious. She’s swelling up, swells till her back’s splitting out the white uniform and she’s let her arms section out long enough to wrap around the three of them five, six times.” (5) Usually, in the olden days women were mostly homemakers, not really having powerful jobs. In this book its the women who controls the men.

Quote 2: “ So she really lets herself go and her painted smile twists, stretches to an open snarl, and she blows up bigger and bigger, big as a tractor, so big I can smell the machinery inside the way you smell a motor pulling too big a load” (5) Metaphors and gender roles

2. The author chose to write the story through Chief Bromden. Why do you think he did that, why not McMurphy or Nurse Ratched? “I been silent so long now it’s gonna roar out of me like floodwaters and you think the guy telling this is ranting and raving my God; you think this is too horrible to have really happened, this is too awful to be the truth! But, please. It’s still hard for me to have a clear mind thinking on it. But it’s the truth even if it didn’t happen.”Bromden (8) The book is written as his story like no one else could tell it like him. The last part has metaphorical meaning to it because it give us an ideas of what could happen in this hospital.

3. How do you think Chief Bromden comes across to the other characters? Do you think the other patients will find out the truth about Bromden? Quote: “Hum of black machinery, humming hate and death and other hospital secrets. They don’t bother talking out loud about their hate secrets when I’m nearby because they think I’m deaf and dumb. Everybody thinks so.” (1)

4. How do the theme of Human freedom vs. Control relate to any of the short stories we read in class? Think of stories like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Harrison Bergeron
