1 Guide to eBooks on the NHS Scotland e-Library Knowledge Services Group, November 2005

2 A book presented in an electronic format which allows it to be read on a computer What is an eBook?

3 Accessing eBooks on the e-Library?  www.elib.scot.nhs.uk  E-Library provides access to 1000s of eBooks  Subscription titles (requiring Athens password), and..  Free titles  Diversity of subjects:  Medicine  Allied Health  Management  Personal Development

4 Using the Browse bar, click on the eBooks button to view an alphabetical list of titles

5 Browse alphabetically by title Choose “Subscription” (password required) or “Free” eBooks Click on the “more…” link to display a detailed record of an eBook.

6 Detailed record Includes eBook title, description, author/editor, and provider.

7 Click on title to open eBook

8 Type your keyword(s) into the Search box and tick the eBooks limit Searching for eBook records. N.B. does not search full text of eBooks

9 eBook providers  NetLibrary  OVID  MD Consult  (A selection of mainly non-clinical titles are also available from Ebsco-Host.)

10 NetLibrary NetLibrary provides the majority of our subscription based eBooks with access to over 4000 titles. Users may ‘borrow’ titles, checking them out for 24 hours at a time.

11 Browse the full list of subscribed eBooks. Search for eBooks using Keywords, Title, Author and Full Text. Within an eBook search the content and browse chapters.

12 OVID Offers access to over 50 key medical, nursing and pharmacy titles. Titles include: Bonica’s management of pain Oxford textbook of medicine Primary care medicine

13 Browse by subject or title You can also search the OVID interface for Title, Author, keyword(s) and view passages from chapters.

14 MD Consult Access to over 70 of the world’s most renowned reference books. Titles include: Handbook of medical psychiatry Practical guide to the care of the medical patient Sabiston textbook of surgery

15 Browse the list of eBooks. Search for information within a book and browse chapters. Find eBooks using the “Search” options.
