12.  Be brief and to the point. For most seniors, 1 – 1½ pages are sufficient.  Proofread very carefully for spelling and grammar. Have a second person proofread. (Errors may be interpreted as carelessness.)  If you include references, speak to the persons first. Otherwise, write “References are available on request.”  Maintain a serious, professional tone. Avoid silliness or jokes.

14.  The cover letter is used to introduce yourself and to try to make an employer interested.  It has an introduction, that is supposed to grab or “hook” the attention of the reader.  It needs to state the purpose and motivation of the applicant for the job.  It also exposes specific characteristics that the applicant wants to present.

16.  Include a heading centered at the top of the letter. (It can be the same as the contact information on the resume.)  Inside address of the possible employer or the newspaper that published the ad.  Salutation with a colon at the end.
