2 Expansion 1803 Louisiana Purchase- Doubles the size of the United States Erie Canal- makes New York City a major sea port Lowell Massachusetts- built for industry Manifest Destiny- many believed it was the their right to expand to the Pacific Ocean Cheap Land & gold- cause huge movements of settlers to move west Transcontinental railroad – helps people move goods and provides transportation

4 What Effect did Expansion have on Native Americans? Lost their lands, hunting grounds Lost food source- bison Forced removal- Trail of Tears Forced onto reservations Lost way of life- culture Millions killed by disease or wars

6 Civil War Causes –Abolition movement in Northern states –Lincoln being elected President –Secession Results –Southern states feared slavery would be abolished –Lincoln would try to end slavery –South was seen as rebellious states

14 WWII- Germany led by Adolph Hitler want revenge Germany invades Poland Japanese bomb Pearl harbor, form alliance with Italy and Germany U.S. joins Great Britain, France and Soviet Union Germany surrenders May 1945, Japan continues to fight U.S. drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan surrenders Sept. 1945
