2 Distance & Displacement Distance –Total distance traveled –measured in Standard International (SI) units meters –This is a scalar quantity and is always positive Displacement –Straight line pointing from start of motion to the ending point –This is a vector quantity
3 Vector Properties Vector quantities: 2 properties –magnitude the size of the vector it is always a positive number –direction In 2D or more this involves angles and +/- signs in 1D this only involves +/- signs.
4 Angles Angles and Simple Trig. r s SI units are RADIANS
6 Speed –Average total distance traveled divided by total time taken –Instantaneous rate at which the distance traveled is changing with time in the direction of motion (always +ve)
7 Velocity & Speed –Average total displacement divided by total time taken –Instantaneous rate at which the displacement is changing with time. –Instantaneous speed magnitude of instantaneous velocity (always +ve) Velocity & Speed
9 Acceleration –Average change of velocity divided by time taken for change –Instantaneous rate at which the velocity is changing with time. –Scalar acceleration magnitude of instantaneous acceleration (always +ve) Acceleration
