2 Who is Mrs. Bailey? West Virginia University graduate Ashburn resident since 2002 Two children: VCU and UVA Background: insurance, investigations, and finance Hobbies: reading, traveling, walking, quilting, learning

3 PRIMARY COURSE OBJECTIVES To improve reading skills & literature appreciation To improve writing skills through the writing workshop process To develop public speaking skills To facilitate independent learning

4 SECONDARY COURSE OBJECTIVES Improve note-taking & study skills Develop test-taking strategies Identify & use one’s own learning style to enhance learning Become collaborative & independent learners

5 STUDENT EXPECTATIONS Arrive prepared for class. Complete assignments on time (in class & home, if needed). Be responsible for make-up work. Read nightly for at least 20 minutes. Ask questions/self-advocate. Respect self & others.

9 Clarity Overview Formative Assessments Calculated for quarter grade Grades based on the LCPS 10- point grading scale No extra credit allowed Students will be retaught and retested if they score below 70%. Summative Assessments Homework, checkpoints, and exit tickets Scores show a range of 1-4 Score of 4 means- I get this! Score of 3 means- proficient Score of 2 means- almost there Score of 1 means- I don’t get this.

10 Grading For grading criteria see class rubric and/or project directions. Grading based on summative assessments  Reading  Writing  Presentations Grades follow LCPS guidelines.

11 Student Agenda To record daily assignments and upcoming assessments/due dates To help students learn to become responsible, young adults To provide a quick message service between parent and teacher
