28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS1 LHC Computing Review  Announced by H. Hoffmann autumn 1999  First Steering Committee meeting 12/1999  By end of 'spring' (?) the review team should formulate and comment substantiated software projects and world- wide analysis schemes and the preliminary resource loaded work-plans, with milestones and objectives, supplying a coherent picture between experiments and CERN IT division

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS2 Mandate (1) At about mid-term between the publication of the technical proposals of the experiments and the start-up of LHC, and well before the submission of the computing TDRs of the experiments, it is an appropriate moment to review the computing plans of the LHC experiments and the corresponding preparations of IT Division with the following aims:  Update the assessment of individual, experiment-specific, regional and CERN facilities, and their relative roles required to perform the computing of the LHC experiments. Update the estimates of the corresponding resources required, taking into account the evolution of the underlying technologies. Identify the software packages to operate in the various places. Identify services to be provided centrally. Identify activities which have to be done at CERN.

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS3 Mandate (2) The outcome of the assessment will help CERN and the experiments to formulate resource-loaded work-plans with objectives, detailed schedules and milestones between now and LHC start, to be described finally in their computing TDRs. It should also provide technical input for the computing MoUs.  Assess the analysis software projects, their organisational structures and interfaces between parts, the corresponding role of CERN and possible common efforts.  Review and comment about the overall and individual computing project management structures and review the resources required

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS4 Mandate (3) The results of the review will be the basis for CERN, the collaborating institutes and their funding agencies to formulate Computing Memoranda of Understanding. These will describe the commitments of institutes inside the collaborations towards their computing goals and the commitments of CERN to provide computing infrastructure and central facilities for the LHC era. The MoUs should be put in place in 2001. The review team should recommend actions and, in particular, common actions between experiments and IT Division that will help to achieve these goals within the existing resources. The review reports to the Research Board and the Director General. Interim status reports will be given to FOCUS, LHCC and other appropriate bodies.

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS5 Organisation  Steering Committee, under which operate three technical panels: Worldwide Analysis/Computing Model panel Software Project panel Management and Resources panel  The Steering Committee meets monthly and the panels organise their own schedule of meetings  Communication by email, private Web Site and public Web Site: http://cern.ch/lhc-computing-review-public

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS10 Steering Committee meetings 8/12Discussion with the panel chairmen on the composition of their panels, procedures for setting up the panel programmes 24/1First full meeting with the experiment representatives. Organisation of the panels, report from the DOE review of US LHC computing, progress statements from the panel chairmen 22/2Status reports from the panels, reflections on the DOE review, CHEP 2000 and the Grids Initiative workshop in Padua 27/3 20/4 29/5 13/6… (more will certainly be needed)

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS11 Worldwide Analysis/ Computing Model panel  Strong interactions with MONARC  Set of 8 questions sent to experiments mid- February as a basis for discussion  Meetings with them and IT Divn 22-24 March to discuss the responses  Will also test reactions in the countries  Use DOE review material as background  Also keep in close touch with the EU Grid Initiative

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS12 Software Project panel  Extensive set of questions sent to experiments and to IT Divn.  Meetings with all of them 13-17 March to discuss the responses

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS13 Management and Resources panel  Strong interaction with other two panels and somewhat dependent on their work  Very difficult task - balance between being over-conservative and over-optimistic  First discussions with experiments 16-17/2  Further meetings planned (with all 4 expts.): 24/3-Reports from the four experiments on their approach to management/resource questions and from the other two panels 14/4-Discussion on software organisation  Good background information from PASTA report and estimates by IT (LMR) in mid-’99

28/2/2000DJ for FOCUS14 (Personal) Conclusions  Somewhat slow start but now up-to-speed  Very big programme of work  Will be tough to converge in the middle of the year but this remains the goal
