“Plumbing” for Prior Knowledge “To differentiate instruction is to recognize students' varying background knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning and interests; and to react responsively.” (NIMAS Center, 1/17/11: Tracey Hall, Nicole Strangman, and Anne Meyer) Plumbing for Prior Knowledge Web Survey Google Forms Results Pre-Assessment

Stress and Technology The stress inherent in learning about and mastering new technology has been around for a long time. Introducing Le Book!Le Book!

Agenda for Today Resources for Apps: Websites for Evaluating and Selecting Apps Basic iPad2 Skills: Practice and Apply Them; Do Some Self-Assessment Content Specific Apps for Reading, Math, Writing and Study Skills Fun Apps for Your Student(s) and Classroom Data Gathering and Sharing Collective Knowledge Resources, Skills and Apps.

Universal Design for Learning CAST, an educational research and development group, and the National Center on Accessing the Curriculum (NCAC) at CAST have worked to develop the concept of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Individual learner differences are considered from the start in the instructional process, and instruction, materials, and tools are made accessible for all students..

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Definition and Component Parts Universal Design for Learning: is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone--not a single, one-size fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs.

Why is UDL Necessary? Individuals bring a huge variety of skills, needs, and interests to learning. Neuroscience reveals that these differences are as varied and unique as our DNA or fingerprints. Three primary brain networks come into play: Mr. Roboto_________Kilroy Was Here, 1983

How Digital Materials Connect to UDL? Digital media is flexible in how it can be stored and transmitted. TVC-15___________Station to Station, 1976 Can be presented in any medium and then transformed to another. It is versatile in displaying content: text, sound, moving image, sound in text, etc. Digital media can be networked. Word Cloud Inspiration

Multi-Sensory Access Use of programs such as Kurzweil (3000), an eReader program, Dragon Naturally Speaking, a text-to-speech program, and even the Reviewing Toolbar of Microsoft Word, provide students with multi-sensory access. (auditory, visual and kinesthetic) “Students preferences and proclivities for certain media and tools can play an important role in deepening their engagement and enhancing their success.” (Rose and Meyer, 2002)

Where does the iPad fit?  Allows the transformation of material from text to audio, audio to text, pictures, cartoons, web clips.  Natural work, pulling out a pad of paper or text book (Connects to World of Work)  Creativity (drawing, recording, photo editing)  Less anti-social information gathering, no physical barrier, easier to share view of screen  Manipulatives, Problem Solving, Strategy gaming  Productivity (communication, presentations, collaboration)
