EMCal Status ALICE Technical Board November 20, 2008 News Schedule

EMCal Nomenclature Module Approximately projective in  and  Strip Module = 12 Modules

ALICE - EMCal Single Super Module US Scope = 7 2/3 Super Modules EU Scope = 3 Super Modules

Summary of EMCal SM #1&2 Installation (September, T. Awes) January 30, 2009 -- Super Modules at Point-2 February 2 – 13, 2009 – Super Module Integrated System testing at CERN February 16, 2009 -- Ready for Installation We are still on this schedule.. (details in a few slides)

Since last update (Sep) : Overview EMCAL TDR presented at LHCC meeting Sept. 23-24 DOE review at LBL (Berkeley) Oct. 16-17 StripModule production underway in US and EU. US SuperModule assembly/calibration operation moved from Yale to WSU (Detroit). FEE components produced (FEC, T-card, IPCB, GTL,..) Examples of past delays/issues – all dealt with.. : Materials procurement for EU modules SuperModule crate shipment to US Counterfeit voltage reference for FEE card from electronics broker.. Issues with APD characteristics (worse gain)

Module Mass-Production in Progress

Strip-Module Mass-Production in Progress

PreAmp and APD LED Calibration Fiber and APD T-Card Strong Back APD and PreAmp Strip-Module Mass-Production in Progress

Strip-Module Mass-Production in Progress : US 18 of 20 produced (24 needed) ready for installation in SM#1 Crate Cosmic Ray testing of StripModules in progress – final cosmic ray calibration awaits integration in SM Crate Ready for SM Crate Delivery on Nov 19 Breaking news (~12 h ago): Delivered SM Crate has “visible damage”. Impact on schedule if the damage can be repaired locally: +2 days. If not (maximum impact; instead use US SM#2 crate - from Geneva Nov 22): +5 days

US SM#1 from Oct 17 to installation window

Modules - On Schedule Strip Modules On Schedule Super Module Slipping shipping Super Module Slipping – SM Crate Delay

SM Mechanical Assembly Start Delayed Nov 10 to Nov 19 Currently plan: Add assembly labor by stopping SM#2 module production  hold Jan 23 CERN arrival date

EU Assembly Status 5 Module assembling stations in full operation (2 LNF, 2 Catania, 1 Nantes) : 128 Modules assembled so far (44% of 1 SM) Rate 25 module/week End of module assembly before Mid January WLS fiber station in operation at Frascati : 1100 produced so far (95 % of 1 SM) Gluing (Light Guide – APD) station in operation at Catania: 300/week. End of gluing in Mid December APD test station in Catania: Mission accomplished (100% of 1 SM) Strip Module assembly: Started this week in Frascati Rate = 1 Strip Module/Day when modules/parts are available SuperModule (SM) assembly: Insertion of Strip Modules in the SM Crate will start next week in Grenoble Cosmic test bench ready to run

EU Part Delivery Status Most of the parts for the EU SM have been delivered apart: Last batch of Lead Tiles (80 modules) by end of November Last batch of Straps (50 modules) in December Last batch of Scintillators Tiles (110 modules) : produced but still on the difficult way from Russia Strong Back (about a half) by end of November Components for the SM crate : Cable fixation, Shims, LED box Electronics : FEE crate and cards, LED system For the installation: Carriage assembly on the way for 1 SuperModule Insertion tooling almost ready for use APD/Module/Stripmodule/SM database in progress Completion of EU SM still expected by end of January

ACCELERATED Schedule in terms of SM Installation Windows No. of US Super Modules Avail. 1 2 5 No. of EU Super Modules Avail. 1 2*2* Current anticipated installation schedule * Requires final INFN funding approval in 2009 Date 2009 2010 2011

EMCal Electronics EMCal readout infrastructure fully installed in L3 and on CalFrame Connections not quite complete EMCal readout chain fully designed, prototyped, and tested @ CERN PS and SPS in 2007 APD + preamplifiers received for first 2 SM Assembly and Testing at Catania and Houston EMCal PCBs and components: T-card, IPCB, GTL, FEE orders placed (Sept-Oct). All items received for first 2 SM, except FEC (under testing; enough for WSU in hand, for Grenoble expected tomorrow), and GTL (expected tomorrow). Trigger: TRU and STU prototypes – ongoing work LED System: Final design being completed Prototype available initially for SM assembly sites. EMCal FEE crate design complete, first two shipped to US, two more (for Grenoble) in production. Expect to have full FEE crate readout of first 2 SMs ready and operational at SM assembly sites by late November/early December. - Need two more RCUs for Grenoble..

H.Muller CERN PH –AID-DT New board layout, New Virtex-5 technology, new ADC 60 MHz 12 bit, reduced power less noise New VIRTEX-5 EMCal TRU

DCS interface TTCRq V0 interface DDL interface L0 in 4 TRU inputs 32 TRU inputs 4 TRU inputs Trigger outputs Summary Trigger Unit

TRU and STU Prototypes exist Trigger meeting ongoing today Intense TRU development period (Hans M., Dong W., Jo S., Norbert N.,..) STU development (Olivier B.), incl. communications with TRU; following ALICE standards (help from Anton J., Pierre VV. appreciated)

Summary Module assembly well underway at WSU and in EU. Readout Electronics deliveries soon complete. LED Calibration system being finalized. TRU+STU prototypes completed and being tested. Facilities and infrastructure upgrades at SM assembly sites completed, FEE readout+DAQ operating. Insertion tooling is ready and tested. Production meeting at WSU/Detroit, Dec 1-2 Schedule is tight..

Extra

APD+Preamplifier Assembly & Test Assembly and test procedure –Assign serial numbers –Measure gain vs bias, temperature dependence –Record in database –Sort according to performance –Attach Light-guide and housing Results of measurements of first 500+ APDs @Catania: V(Gain=30) Catania V(Gain=50) Hamamatsu Significantly more APDs with V30>400 V than expected in later batches.. Problem for equalizing at desired gain.
