Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20051 ALICE meets LHCC referees 31/01/2005 15:00  Milestones report H-A Gustafsson  FMD questions H. Boggild  T0 questions W. Trzaska  V0 questions J-Y Grossiord AGENDA

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20052 General Milestone Comments The ALICE Management through the TC are reviewing the planning of all subsystem milestones to be presented at the CR5. This will result in a new baseline for the LHC milestones. We suggest to present in addition a “just in time” LHC milestone list. Furthermore, a milestone plot for the previously agreed “minimal ALICE detector” will be presented.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20053 The TPC pre-installation in SXL2 has been delayed. The space available is limited and there is no need to install the required racks with network and DCS computers in SXL2 until the pre-installation is finished. Racks, network and the DCS Back-end computers are being prepared and will be installed as soon as the space has been liberated, which presently is estimated to March 2005 DCS milestone 547 Jan-05 -> Mar-05

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20054 Trigger milestone 301 Jan-05 -> done The CTP boards are in the final design stage and the schematic design for the first board is currently being converted to a PCB at RAL. The remaining boards will follow in sequence. A) Production of all boards will be finished by this Summer. B) Testing of the complete CTP processor is expected to commence in Sep-05. C) Installation of the CTP in ALICE pit is likely to begin in very early 2006 (January or February). D) Software development for the CTP is ongoing.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20055 DIMUON milestone 111 Jan-05 -> Feb-05 The disassembly of the magnet in the pre- commissioning position has started end 2004. The reassembly of the yoke in the final location will start mid February 2005. A delay is also announced on the next Dipole milestones. The commissioning of the dipole at final location (milestone 112) will be carried out in Jun-05 and the field mapping will start (milestone 113) in Jul-05 (completion Sept-05).

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20056 DIMUON milestone 431 Dec-04 -> done Further system tests will continue during 2005. This will not delay the construction and installation of the elements on the chambers.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20057 DIMUON milestone 163 Jan-05 -> Apr-05 The muon filter is at present under construction. The first of the seven modules will be delivered at CERN in the beginning of Feb-05. The others will follow and the delivery will be completed by Apr-05. It is worth to note that this shift, which is not critical, has allowed substantial savings.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20058 DIMUON milestone 146 Dec-04 -> done This milestone has been achieved. The construction has been completed and the frames are within specifications. DIMUON milestone 139 Jan-05 -> done The construction of slats for station 5 was started according to schedule.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 20059 DIMUON milestone 141 Dec-04 -> done The production of the slats for St. 4 was completed. All the slats underwent HV and gas tests, while read- out tests are at present in progress.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200510 DIMUON milestone 424 Jan-05 -> May-05 Tracking Electronics 424 end of tendering MANUS Oct- 03, Jan-05, May-05 The delay on this milestone is due to administrative reasons. May-05 is the present date for choosing the company. This delay has an impact on milestone 426 (electronics ready for installation) which is postponed to Nov-05. This date is however compatible with the installation plans (start Jan-06).

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200511 DIMUON milestone 487 Jan-05 -> Jan-06 This milestone is shifted to Jan-06 (see also reports on milestones 441 and 442). The trigger mechanical support, the trigger detector and FE electronics as well as the regional and local trigger boards (and cables from FEE to trigger electronics) will be ready for the start of the installation in Jan-06.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200512 DIMUON milestone 441 Jan-05 -> Dec-05 As already communicated in the report of Nov-04, the tests with cosmics of the whole RPC production (milestone 440) will be completed by Nov-05. This implies that the chambers will be ready for installation in Dec-05. This delay is compatible with the new schedule for the installation of the muon trigger detector, which will start in Jan-06.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200513 DIMUON milestone 442 Feb-05 -> Aug-05 A pre-production batch of the local trigger boards (20 units, corresponding to 10% of the total production) was delivered in the fall-04. These boards underwent extensive tests and all of them were found to be fully operational. Following this result, the whole production was ordered in Dec-04 and will be completed by Feb-05 (milestone 436). The test bench (both hardware and software) is ready for testing the whole production. These tests will continue until Aug-05

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200514 DIMUON milestone 318 Dec-04 -> Dec-05 The electronics development is progressing normally in Lyon. A first FEE board (CIU) is under tests since November 2004. The design of a second board (CCIU) has started. The tests of both boards will be carried out during this year in order to have the final design in December 2005. DIMUON milestone 319 Dec-04 -> Dec-05

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200515 HMPID milestone 14 Feb-05 -> done The PRR of the liquid circulation system was successfully passed in February 2004. Blue prints of the system were prepared in November 2004 after the completion of the comprehensive tests performed in Bari with final size prototypes. Such tests allowed to define the critical parameters of some relevant circuit elements like the height of the header tubes and the diameter of the inlet and outlet pipes. The pieces of the circulation system available on the market were procured whilst the custom pieces were manufactured at CERN. Assembly of the HMPID cradle will start in the next weeks after the loading test of the support structure is finished.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200516 ITS milestone 82 Dec-04 -> This milestone will be commented by the ITS group at the meeting.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200517 PMD milestone 188 Sep-04 -> Dec-05 Mixer unit essential completed. Components for distribution unit are being ordered. PMD milestone 187 Oct-04 -> Dec-05

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200518 PMD milestone 528 Feb-05 -> done First batch of MANAS done. Delivery together with MANAS for the muon system. 30 000 MANAS chips ready for packaging. A small delay of one month to achieve 10% unit module production PMD milestone 525 Feb-05 -> Mar-05 PMD milestone 526 Feb-05 -> Sep-05 The delay is due to the rejection of the main batch of PCBs. A new supplier had to be found. A schedule review will be held on Feb 3-4 at VECC.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200519 TOF milestone 458 Jan-05 -> done See F. Formenti's report (27/9/2004) on TOF Electronics production schedule. In time with the schedule, INFN has approved in December 2004 the start of the tender for the FEA boards, hence the tender has started. Next steps will follow, as presented in Formenti's report. TOF milestone 450 Jan-05 -> Jul-05 See report on milestone n. 449 (Start module assembly). With the first assembled modules expected at the end of May/beginning of June 2005, we plan to start the test with the cosmics station at CERN in July 2005.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200520 TOF milestone 449 Jan-05 -> Jun-05 The tender for modules assembly was finished and approved by INFN at the end of December 2004, with a delay with respect to expectations. Production, delivery and test of the prototypes (one for each type of module) will take about 4 months. Therefore we foresee to have the first assembled modules at the end of May/beginning of June 2005.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200521 TOF milestone 477 Jan-05 -> Apr-05 The HV system is made of 32 boards (CAEN A1534), housed in 2 CAEN SY1527 mainframes, bringing the HV to the TOF modules through a chain made of tripolar cables followed by distribution boxes; each box feeds up to 5 unipolar cables providing the HV (separately for +ve and -ve polarity) to a module. The full chain has been successfully tested : A) the A1534 boards (both the positive and the negative polarity) have been extensively tested at PS and in Bologna; B) the tripolar cable (Kerpen SL-V2YCH 3XAWG26) and tripolar connectors (CPE 28-020) have been tested in the beam. This material is purchased and stored at CERN; C) the final samples of the unipolar cable and connectors have been delivered and tested in beam; D) the final prototypes of the distribution box have been delivered and tested. Therefore we foresee to have most of the parts for the HV system produced (at least the part needed this year) delivered by April 2005

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200522 TPC milestone 221 Jan-05 -> Jun-05 The preparations for the ITS-TPC integration test have lasted longer than anticipated, with the test itself now scheduled to finish in Apr-05. May-05 will be needed to set up the infrastructure in the SXL2 clean room: crane, a platform easily adaptable in height for access to the sectors, storage and cleaning facilities for chambers. Actual mounting of chambers will start in Jun05. TPC milestone 246 Oct-04 -> done This milestone is the combination of #205,207,209,210, leading to the start of the ITS-TPC integration tests. The last pieces to be completed in Nov-04 were the feet for the Service Support Wheels and the track-rods and tie-rods connecting it to the end plate.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200523 TRD milestone 356 Dec-04 -> done The PRR took place as scheduled on December, 15. Low voltage distribution (in particular the return currents of the individual supply voltages) as well as grounding at the PASA input is not fully optimized yet. Consequently, the design goal for the system noise of 1000 electrons has not yet been achieved. To this end detailed measurements were carried out and further modifications were suggested. They have been implemented in the latest design. Board delivery scheduled for end Jan-05.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200524 TRD milestone 357 Jan-05 -> Jun-05 As mentioned for milestone 356 the readout board is undergoing some modification to reach optimum performance with respect to overall system noise. Also, production of the final digital chip has been delayed because of delivery problems at the foundry incurred with the engineering run. Consequently, the start of production will be delayed. In addition, one further design modification is being implemented in order to reduce the voltage drop across the voltage regulators which constitutes a significant fraction of the entire power budget of the TRD.

Hans-Åke GustafssonLHCC review January 31, 200525 TRD milestone 355 Dec-04 -> done Heidelberg, Dubna, Bucharest, and GSI are producing chambers. Common quality assurance procedures have been established. By the end of December the milestone for 10% completed was reached.
