1. Puja
It may be worth explaining to your class that the wide variation in the way puja is practised reflects the tendency for individuals to establish strong personal relationships with different deities. While the rituals described above form the basis for most pujas, private pujas either in the home or at the mandir normally also include time for reflection and personal prayer. Offerings may also vary between cultures and individuals: they can range from grains of coloured sand to gifts of money and carrier bags full of groceries. Many Hindus believe that it is not the offering itself which counts, but the spirit of devotion in which it is offered.

3. The role of the priests
Some temples have many priests, others only one, but their function is the same. The priests’ principle duty is to care for the murtis. This can consume a substantial part of the day as the murtis are treated with great honour.
Besides this, the priest is expected to guide worshippers through darshan and puja, study the holy texts, lead important communal pujas, and officiate at important ceremonies such as weddings and funerals.
When a baby is born, the priest visits the house and draws up a horoscope. This is used to calculate auspicious dates for important life events like weddings.

4. How to behave in a mandir
If you have the opportunity to visit a mandir, remember the following ground rules.
Remove your shoes before entering the mandir, and don’t wear shorts or mini-skirts.
Remember you are in a place of worship and meditation. Don’t speak unless absolutely necessary, and switch off your mobile phone.
Show particular respect in front of the murtis, and never point your feet towards them. If you are offered prashad, accept it politely.
If bringing food to the mandir, make sure it’s vegan.
Finally, remember that many mandirs will not allow you to take photographs. Always ask permission.
