Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Overview of Workpackage 1: Documentation Rob van Treuren EU Leafy Veg start-up meeting Wageningen, February 14, 2007

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands EU Leafy Veg: Workpackages WP1: Documentation WP2: Characterization and regeneration WP3: Evaluation WP4: Utilization and marketing WP5: Coordination

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Databases: State of the art Lettuce ILDB (CGN) 21 collections 12028 accessions Spinach To be developed Chicory To be developed Minor crops To be developed

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands WP1: Objectives Crop databases Update of the ILDB DB development for spinach, chicory and minor crops Selection of material to be used in other WPs Linkage of data from other WPs to databases Organization of a safety duplication system Identification of gaps within the collections

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands WP1: Activities Collection of passport data Task leaders, partners, non-project members, EURISCO Selection of material for use in other WPs Task leaders, partners involved in WPs, curators Incorporation of new data in DB’s DB managers, partners generating new data Design of safety duplication system All genebank partners Identification of collection gaps DB managers, genebank partners

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands WP1: Role within the project

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands WP1: Duration and coordination Duration Month 1-48 WP-leader CGN Task-leaders CGN (lettuce and spinach) GEVES (chicory) IPK (minor crops)

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands WP1: Deliverables D1: All passport data collected (month 30) D2: DBs developed and on the internet (month 48) D3: Other WP data linked to the DBs (month 48) D4: Safety duplication systems ready (month 48) D5: Collection gaps identified (month 48)

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands WP1: Milestones Year 1 Start of request for passport data (month 3) Start of selection of material for evaluation (month 3) Material selected for regeneration and characterization (month 6) Material selected for evaluation (month 12) Safety duplication system designed and discussed (month 12) Year 2 Collection of passport data completed (month 24)

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands WP1: Milestones - continued Year 3 DBs with passport data nearly finalized (month 36) Start of inclusion of characterization and evaluation data in DBs (month 36) Safety duplication partly realized (month 36) Start identification of collection gaps (month 36) Year 4 Start availability of DBs on the internet (month 42) Safety duplication realized (month 42) Main part of characterization and evaluation data included in DBs (month 45)

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Discussion points Databases Design according to ECPGR concept, largely following the format of the ILDB? Hosted by task leader? Only data of material that is available for use? Distribution of formats necessary for data submission? Consistent display within fields (e.g. predefined crop type indication) Distinction between donor and origin Other identification numbers (e.g. used by donor genebanks) Safety duplication system Follow-up of ECPGR activities (bottlenecks?)

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Discussion points - continued Selection procedure of material for other WP’s?  Selection of material for evaluation (core?)  Check-up of seed quantity and quality of the selection  Selected material with low seed quantity/quality receives highest priority for regeneration  Additional accessions to be regenerated/characterized based on preference and need (curators?) Collection gaps Gaps in DB, not in individual collections? Definition of gap?

Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands Discussion points - continued Other issues? ………..
