Essential Question ? (this is to be answered in the Purpose): What are the three types of bonding and how are they different from one another? TYPES OF BONDING IN SOLIDS

Compound NameBalanced Formula Sodium chloride Iron metal Copper metal Sugar Calcium chloride Water MATERIALS

Conductivity Meter with chart Crucible Distilled Water MATERIALS

Define the following: 1.Aqueous 2.Conductivity 3.Ionic 4.Covalent 5.Metallic 6.Solubility VOCABULARY

SugarSodium Chloride CopperCalcium Chloride Iron Water Solubility Solid Conductivity Aqueous conductivity Type of Bonding DATA

1.Clean the electrodes with a damp paper towel. Touch the electrodes of the conductivity tester to each solid. Record results. After each test, clean the electrodes. 2.Use a small scoop of solid and add a approx. an inch of deionized water into a crucible. Observe if the solid is soluble (dissolves). Record. 3.Use the above mixture and test for conductivity. Record. 4.Determine what type of bonding is present. PROCEDURE

1.Why is deionized water used instead of tap water? 2.Predict what problems could occur if tap water was used? Explain what substances are in tap water that are not in distilled water. 3.Why do the electrodes need cleaned before each conductivity test? 4.List the differences in the three types of bonding. QUESTIONS IonicCovalentMetallic What is it? Occurs between?

5. Complete the following chart: SubstanceType of BondBoiling PointConducts Electricity Solid, Liquid, or Gas at Room Temp. Sugar Iron Sodium chloride Copper Calcium chloride

6. What type of bonding is present in sugar. List your experimental evidence and provide the chemical formula for sugar.

7. Research the chemical structure of diamond. What would you predict to be the results of this experiment performed on diamond, and what would you predict the bond type to be? Include the following: QUESTIONS SubstanceType of Bond Boiling PointConducts Electricity Solid, Liquid, or Gas at Room Temp. Diamond
