2 Imagery zAn image is language that describes something that can be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled. zThe images in a literary work are referred to, when considered together, as the work’s imagery.

3 Sight z The sun’s beams shimmered and danced on the ocean’s gentle waves.

4 Smell z The fragrant roses drifted through the room like elusive ghosts.

5 Sound z Although they could not see outside the cabin, they could hear the eerie tapping, tapping, tapping, of his knife upon their door.

6 Taste z The cheesecake’s exquisite flavor traveled from his tongue to his spine.

7 Touch z The icy breeze gently brushed against the hair on her neck, and goose-bumps shortly followed.

8 Tone zTone is synonymous with attitude Questions you can ask when looking for tone in a piece: What is the author’s/speaker’s attitude (tone)? How does he or she feel about something? What is their overall opinion about the subject of a piece or the audience (reader)? What is the authors personality?

9 How does the author create tone in a piece? zDiction The author creates tone by his or her selection of words. zDetail The author creates tone by his or her descriptions of words, phrases, concepts, and ideas. zSyntax The author creates tone by arranging words in a specific way. zImagery The author creates tone by bringing the reader into the action of the piece through appealing to the 5 senses.

10 How does the reader perceive tone? zBy examination of z Diction zDetail zImagery zSyntax zWhen you examine these elements you discover the author’s tone (attitude) towards you, the reader, and towards the subject of the piece.

11 What is the purpose of tone? zIt sets the relationship between reader and writer. zCreates growing emotion in the reader. zConnects the material to the reader. zTone is the hallmark of the writer’s personality.

12 Understanding Tone zUnderstanding tone is a prerequisite to understanding meaning. zIt is key to understanding the author’s mood zIt is key to making connections between the author’s thought and its expression.
