2 How do artists create special effects to entertain us?

3 What are digital effects and how are they created? Why might artists choose to create gruesome appearances on a computer using digital effects? Why is it necessary for artists to create illusion when making movies? How do props help create scenes in movies?

4  Three-dimensional- having three dimensions: height, depth, and width  A cube is a three dimensional object.  Realistic- lifelike or like the real thing  The mummy was so realistic that I screamed when it moved.  Teach your partner these words

5 Compound words are made up of two smaller words. Here is a test: If you cover up either part, is it a word that can stand on its own? If not it is not a compound word: Helpful-Yes or no? Nightmare-Yes or no?

6 Find the compound word in the sentence: She fell over the workbench in the darkness. It was thoughtful to give a football to him for Christmas. It was helpful to talk about the nightmare.

8 Headings: Look at the headings and captions in Special Effects in Film and Television starting on page 457. Headings help us understand at a glance what each section is all about They can also help us find information quickly How does the author use headings to classify the information in this article?

9 Prefixes: pre- re- Pre- means before Prehistoric means before history Re- means again Reassemble means to assemble again

10 Prefixes Read “Visiting the Past” on p. 453 Look for prefixes that might help determine the meanings of words you don’t know.

11 Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases Into Into the tunnel The train is going into the tunnel. Into-indicates the direction, it tells us where something is going The prepositional phrase tells us that the train is going into the tunnel The tunnel is the object of the phrase

12 Background- what is seen behind the subject The trees looked green in the background. Landscape- view of scenery on land The landscape was filled with harsh mountains. Teach your partner these words

13 miniature- small They gave apples to the miniature ponies. Prehistoric- relating to times before written history Dinosaurs are from a prehistoric period. Teach your partner these words

14 reassembled- made whole again She reassembled the doll house after her sister broke it. Explosions- violent bursts Explosions shook the windows and rattled the glasses on the shelf. Teach your partner these words

17 Think about which form of entertainment you prefer: watching a movie or a television program Compare and contrast the two using specific details to make your point To help you will need to make a 2 column chart. Make a list of TV shows and movies you like and write why you like them.
