4. Fantasy Motifs Special Character Types: Wicked witches, vampires, hobbits Fantastic Objects : silver slippers; flying broom A story containing all 6 fantasy motifs is either a classic fairy tale or an example of modern high fantasy.

Modern Fantasy/Science Fiction “futuristic fiction” “Difference in science fiction and other modern fantasy is not subject matter but its unique aim to suggest real hypotheses about the future or nature of the universe”. In novels of science fiction, such topics as mind control, genetic engineering, visitors from outer space, and future political and social systems all seem possible. Dystopia is sometimes a focus in “futuristic fiction”. Science fantasy often mixes magical occurrences with scientific facts.

6. Modern Fantasy/Science Fiction Modern fantasy has appeal for persons with non-literal minds. Children with lively imaginations, are especially open to reading fantasies. Good fantasy actually tells the truth about life and creates emotional impact. Fantasy can be described as a “large worked out metaphor”.
