2. Approximately 33% of the municipal solid waste stream is made up of paper and paperboard products. Paper makes up the largest portion of the municipal waste stream and is also one of the most recovered materials.

3. Recycling produces numerous direct and indirect benefits:  Conserves resources  Prevents emissions of many greenhouse gases and water pollutants  Saves energy

4.  Supplies valuable raw materials to industry  Creates jobs  Stimulates the growth of greener technologies  Reduces the need for new landfills and incinerators

5. 1) Trees are cut down in the forest and are then sent to a paper mill.

6. 2)A machine removes the bark from the wood. Bark is not used to make paper, but it is used for other things. Can you think of ways that bark can be used? Nothing is wasted.

7. 3)Once the bark is removed from the wood, it is chopped into very small pieces with a chipper. The small pieces of wood are coming out of the bottom of the big machine.

8. 4)Did you know that they cook wood so that it can be made into paper? The chipped wood and some chemicals are added to a big pressure cooker. The wood chips are cooked until they turn into a soft, slippery pulp or slurry.

9. 5)Now the soft, slippery paper pulp or slurry is poured into a container. In this picture the container is on the left side. The container pours the slurry onto a large screen. This is where the water is drained from the paper. Next, the paper is pressed flat between two rollers.
