Our Pilgrimage through Life Number 10:29 Chris Reeves * Westside church of Christ Gospel Meeting * April 7, 2006

Introduction A pilgrimage is defined as “a journey, especially a long one, made to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion” The Israelites were on such a journey when they invited Hobab to join them All men and women of faith are on a pilgrimage –Hebrews 11:13 We are on such a journey –1 Peter 2:11 So let’s look at our journey together

The Christian’s Journey The World Is Behind Him  The world tries to mold him (Rom. 12:1-2)  The world tries to distract him (2 Tim. 2:4)  The world is his enemy (Jas. 4:4)  The world is on a different track (1 Pet. 4:4)  The world is passing away (1 Jn. 2:15-17)

The Christian’s Journey His Cross is On His Back  Cross-bearing is a condition of discipleship (Mt. 10:38; 16:24)  Cross-bearing calls for daily sacrifice and self-denial (Lk. 9:23)  Cross-bearing is a personal matter (1 Cor. 9:25-27; Gal. 2:20; 6:14)  Cross-bearing comes before crown- bearing (Heb. 12:2)

The Christian’s Journey The Map is in His Hand  God’s word contains the directions and instructions for his journey (Psa. 119:19)  God’s word provides the light for his journey (Psa. 119:104-105)  God’s word helps him avoid the crossroads, bypaths, pits and snares of sin (Psa. 119:11; Gal. 5:7)

The Christian’s Journey His Companions are By His Side  Jesus is by his side (Mt. 28:20; Heb. 4:16; 13:5)  Godly brethren are by his side (Gal. 6:2; 1 Thess. 5:14; Heb. 12:12)

The Christian’s Journey The Fuel is in His Heart  Genuine love keeps him committed (2 Cor. 6:6; 1 Pet. 1:22)  Fervent zeal keeps him active (Rom. 12:11)  One hope drives him onward (Eph. 4:4)

The Christian’s Journey His Destination (Heaven) is in His View  He does not look back (Lk. 9:62)  He looks up to Jesus (Heb. 12:1-2)  He looks up to heaven (Phil. 3:14-15; Col. 3:1-2; Heb. 11:10,16)

Conclusion There are only two paths for your journey through life (Mt. 7:13-14) –Each path has a distinct destination –If you aren’t looking for any destination, then you are choosing hell –Heaven must be sought to be found Like Moses said, “Come with us…”
