3 Basic Concepts Data: A collection of unprocessed items, which can include text, numbers, images, audio, or video. Isolated facts which have not been processed by any user.

4 Basic Concepts Database: A collection of data organized in a way that allows storage, access, retrieval, and future use of that data. Relational databases

5 Basic Concepts Collection: A set of items grouped together, in terms of their characteristics, subject, or format. Digital Collection: A set of items grouped together in digital format, in terms of their characteristics or subject.

7 Basic Concepts Digital Repository: A collection of items produced and published by an institution, which are made available to the academic community or the general public. Institutional, truly free, and corporate repositories are often referred to as digital libraries.

8 Digital Repository: Example DRUM: Digital Repository at the University of Maryland Provides server space for UMD faculty Provides features for browsing Manages access permissions and policy Right to access and distribute digital items in the repository is given to the University of Maryland www.lib.umd.edu

9 Digital Repository: Example Dspace: An open-source digital archiving system designed by MIT Libraries and Hewlett Packard to capture, manage, and share research in digital formats. Over 200 organizations have adopted Dspace as the basic architecture to develop their institutional repositories. http://dspace.org/
