1 Functional Dimensions: Henri Fayol These dimensions depends qualification and educational skills of the manager and the dimensions are work specific. The other activities of a business enterprise that managers perform, according to Fayol, could be divided into six categories: Technical (Production, Manufacturing) Commercial (Buying, Selling, Exchanging) Financial (Obtaining and using capital) Security (Protecting of property and persons) Accounting (Balance sheet, stock taking, statistics, costing) Managerial (Planning, Organizing, Commanding, Co- coordinating, Control)

3 Ten Managerial Roles identified by Mintzberg 1)Interpersonal Roles : The informational role link all managerial work together. A Manager in order to be effective has to assume different roles at different points of time as demanded by the call of the duty.. The three interpersonal rules are: a)Figurehead role: Manager perform some duties of ceremonial nature such as greeting the dignitaries, attending the wedding of an employee, taking important customer to lunch and so on b)Leader As a leader he has to motivate and encourage the employees. He should try to match the individual needs with the goals of the organization c) Liaison role Every Manager must cultivate contact outside his vertical chain of command to collect information useful for his organization.

4 2)Informational Roles: Informational roles involve receiving, collecting, and disseminating information. The three information role include: a)Monitor - scan the environment always for information - The monitor seeks internal and external information about issues that can affect the organization. b)Disseminator role The disseminator transmits information internally that is obtained from either internal or external sources c)Spokes Person - The spokesperson transmits information about the organization to outsiders. Thus he advises shareholders about financial performance, assure consumer group that the organization its social responsibility and satisfies government that the organization is abiding by law 3)Decisional Roles: Decisional roles revolved around making choices. Managers’ interpersonal role leads to the decisional roles. Information and resources that’s collected and gathered by the

5 interpersonal makes a manger able to play the decisional roles or responsibilities that his is obligated to. The four decisional roles include being an entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator, and negotiator. a)Entrepreneurial role: - As a manager, you create and control change within the organization. This means solving problems, generating new ideas, and implementing them. - Settle conflicts between subordinates; Choose strategic alternatives; Overcome crisis situations b) Disturbance handler role - Deals with disputes or problems and takes corrective action - Settle conflicts between subordinates; Choose strategic alternatives; Overcome crisis situations c)Resource allocator - Decide where to apply resources - Draft and approve of plans, schedules, budgets; Set priorities d) Negotiator: - anticipates in and directs negotiations within team, department, and organization - The negotiator represents the organization in major negotiations affecting the manager's areas of responsibility.
