1 5th Grade Value-shape into form using value to turn organic shapes into form OBJECTIVE: The students will learn that value reveals Form. The students will indicate their understanding of value by making shapes into forms using value. Materials newsprint paper (for practice)looks like manilla paper 9x12 White paper pencils - 2H, HB, 6B, black charcoal pencil erasers - white plastic & kneaded eraser *print out several copies of the gray scale on slide 5, cut into 5 strips each student should get a gray scale Class Periods - 2 Set up Make sure pencils are sharpened before class begins. Before class enters, give each place paper, pencils, erasers. Make sure the students put their name and date on every project!

2 Value is an element of art that helps us to create three- dimensional forms. Who knows the difference between a Shape and a Form ? A shape is two-dimensional; it only has height and width. A form has height, width, and depth; three measurements for a three-dimensional object. Procedure 1. Take your white sheet of paper and lightly draw off three or four organic shapes - shapes that happen naturally - not geometric. Using your gray scale you're going to 2. Shade in around the edges of your shapes until you've created the illusion of form. Be sure that you blend in the outlines with value or shading to keep your form from looking flat which is what outlines do. As you shade, curve your strokes as though you were going around the form. This is not difficult to do, but takes time. Do not get in a hurry. Finish well.

8 vocabulary symmetry - in drawing is a balanced arrangement of lines and shapes, on opposite sides of an often-imaginary centerline. Shape - the outward outline of a form. Basic shapes include circles, squares and triangles Line - are basically comprised of three families, straight, angle, and curved, which can be combined to make line drawings. pattern - repetition of line and shape cast shadow- this is the kind of shadow that chases you on a summer day form shadow- this is the kind of shadow that doesn't get any light. Like the dark side of the moon. value- the quality of lightness or darkness of a mark or shape. edges- the boundary between shapes. highlight- the reflection of the light source on an object. light side- the part of an object receiving direct light dark side- the part of an object opposite the light source reflected light- subtle light bouncing back into the shadow core shadow- the darkest part of a shadow sandwiched between the light side and reflected light value gradation - The slow transition from one shade to another.
