Goal: We will use the “R” strategy to help make a personal connection to text.

 Step 1 Know the purpose for reading (in this case it will be to make a personal connection but be sure to read the question before reading so you know what strategy to use)  Step 2 Next to the section of the text you can relate to, put a large “R” and write next to it your experience that relates to the text, just one word will do  Step 3 ◦ Answer the question using a (1-2-3 Response) ◦ Hint: Be specific in your response. Be sure to use descriptive detail to describe your experience and tell if it was the same or different. Make the connection in (# 3) of your (1-2-3) response.

 Question: When did you experience a gross story. How was your experience alike or different from the text? Use information from the text to support your answer.

 Answer: I had a similar experience occur on my eighth birthday. My mom told me to close my eyes because she had present for me when, “splash”, a huge piece of cake crashed in my face. I was upset and got even more angry when my mom told me it was just a “little thing” and that I shouldn’t get upset. This was like in the story after the dad put poo in the girl’s bed. The dad said, “Don’t let a little thing like that worry you.” It seems my mom and the dad in the story both don’t remember what it feels like to be a kid!!

 Step 1 (Before Reading) Go into Student Commons on Vulture, Team 5-1, shared work folder titled, “Book Club C-Strand”, and preview your group’s C Strand question.  Step 2 (During Reading)  Use the ‘R’ strategy while reading (use sticky notes so you don’t need to mark the text) to help you answer the question.  Step 3 (After Reading) Have one student type the group generated response, save it in the group members LA folder, and then copy and paste it into the Drop Folder (student commons on Vulture, 5-1) Book Club C-Strand Lesson so we can view all group responses. ◦ Make sure to give a two point response!!!

 Read the story, Testing New Waters, and answer the C strand question. Be sure to give a three point response.
