2 Materials

3  Distilled bottled water  3 oz. plastic cups  Small test tube w/cap from florist  1 Tsp. of dish soap mixed with 3 Tsp. water  1 Tsp. Gatorade  Very cold Ethyl Alcohol 91% or greater keep on ice  Disposable pipettes  Paper towels

4 Collect Cells from Mouth  Put Gatorade in mouth. Wash around. Scrape tongue against teeth to take off cells. Then spit Gatorade out into 3 oz. cups.  Add “Cell Gatorade” to test tube and add solution of 1 Tsp. dish soap with 3Tsp. Water.  Gently rock test tube. Don’t cause bubbles in the tube.  Then add 1 Tsp. of very cold Ethyl Alcohol.  Strands of DNA should appear.

5  In my experiment I did the DNA test on me, my dad, and my dog.  The DNA appeared in me and my dad’s test tube very well but we could not see any strands in Cricket’s (my dog) test tube.  Since we could not make Cricket spit out the Gatorade we swabbed his mouth instead.
