4 OBJECTIVES SWBAT understand and explain dialogue. SWBAT to use quotation marks correctly in writing. SWBAT complete a RAFT assignment centered around punctuation.

5 DIALOGUE Dialogue is when someone in a story is talking. Dialogue is the exact words that somebody says.

6 WHAT IS A SPEECH TAG? The speech tag is a phrase that tells us who is talking. Example: Ms. Casey said, “…” Example: “…” the student replied.

7 RULES FOR DIALOGUE Surround the exact words the person said (including punctuation marks) with quotation marks. Capitalize the first word of a quote (unless it is not a complete sentence). Start a new line when a different person is speaking.

8 WHAT IS THE CORRECT WAY TO PUNCTUATE DIALOGUE? Speech tag at the beginning: Ms. Casey said, “We are going to learn how to create dialogue.” Speech tag at the end: “We are going to learn how to create dialogue,” Ms. Casey said. Speech tag in the middle: “We,” Ms. Casey said, “are going to learn how to create dialogue.”

11 QUOTATION MARKS Quotation marks are used to show someone’s exact words.

12 PUNCTUATION OVERVIEW Punctuating Dialogue & Quotations When you write down something that someone is saying in a story, or you quote a written text, you need to use “ quotation marks.” Before the quotation, you need to put a comma. Ex: She said, “Look at me!” After the quotation, the punctuation always goes INSIDE the quotation marks. Ex: She said, “Look at me!” Ex: After class he asked, “Do you want to study together?”
