6 QUARKS-2010 Albert N. Tavkhelidze – the outstanding world wide known physicist, full member of Russian Academy of Sciences and Academy of Sciences of Georgia passed away on 27 February 2010 before his 80-th birthday. He was born in 1930 in Tbilisi, Georgia. After graduation Tbilisi State University he studied theoretical physics in Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow where he has proved his PhD under supervision of academician N.N.Bogolubov. Then he was invited to work in Laboratory of Theoretical Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna where he has passed long and bright way from young scientific staff member up to the deputy-director of the Laboratory (1956 – 1970).

7 QUARKS-2010 Here he published many of his outstanding scientific works and acquired a great experience in organization of scientific research. Among his major achievements are: the derivation of dispersion relations and approximate dispersion equations in particle physics, development of the quasipotential method in quantum field theory, introduction the new quantum number of quarks (latter called the color) and development the relativistic model of the colored quarks, formulation the finite energy sum rules and study its connection with duality, formulation of the Automodelity (or self-similarity) principle and study the automodel asymptotics in quantum field theory, derivation of the famous the quark counting rules, study the spontaneous symmetry breaking in the gauge theories and its influence on the vacuum structure and possible strong non- conservation of the superdense fermionic matter and other impotant results.

8 QUARKS-2010 Albert Tavkhelidze has played the very important role in the creation of the Institute for Nuclear Research in Moscow and was its first director (1970 – 1986). He create in INR the famous school of theoretical physics, whose members work now in different places in Russia and elsewhere in the world. Albert Tavkhelidze has played the key role in organization of the Institute for High Energy Physics of Tbilisi State University, Department of Theoretical Physics in Mathematical Institute of Academia of Sciences of Georgia. He played important role in creation of the Institute for Theoretical Physics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev. One of his last achievements was establishment of the Chair of Particle Physics and Cosmology in Moscow State University. Albert Tavkhelidze for many years served as the plenipotentiary of the Georgian government in JINR. For 20 years he was the President of the Georgian Academy of Sciences.

9 QUARKS-2010 For his excelent Scientific achievements A.Tavkhelidze was awarded the highest scientific prizes of Soviet Union and Russian Federation and was decorated by State orders. With Albert Tavkhelidze`s passing the Russian, Georgian and world physical community has lost highly distinguished and dedicated physicist-researcher and teacher. His worm and open character and bright personality will be missed by all of us. Since the first International Seminar “Quarks” in 1980 and for all 30 years Albert Tavkhelidze was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of “Quarks” till this year 2010. His close collegues and collaborators would like to dedicate this Seminar “Quarks-2010” to the memory of Albert Tavkhelidze and very much hope that you-the participants of the Seminar support this intention.
