1 Julington Creek NEWSLETTER News about the collective work at the Julington Creek church of Christ and updates on individuals and families. Volume 2 Issue 3January 20, 2013 Follow Me, and I will make you… In Matthew 4:18, Jesus calls Simon and Andrew from their fishing nets to a calling higher than they ever imagined. Christ told the two that He would make them “fishers of men.” Wisely, they left their nets immediately and followed the Lord. Everyone knows how these men went on to be chosen apostles and converted many people to Christ (Mt. 10:1-14). Our focus in this article is the source of their power to change the world. “Follow Me,” Christ said, and, “I will make you….” Peter and Andrew were not the only people in the Bible record whose lives were drastically changed, and who, in turn, changed the world of their day. God uses those who surrender to Him. There is no limit to what God can do through a fully-surrendered person. Consider two others whose lives encourage us to surrender all to the Lord: Moses. In Exodus 4:10-12, Moses complained that he was weak in his ability to speak to other people. He had spent the last 40 years of his life tending sheep in the deserted areas of Moab. How could that experience possibly equip him for the task God was assigning him (he thought!)? However, God showed Moses that what He required was surrender to His will. God would make Moses what he needed to be. “I will be with your mouth and teach you what you need to say (4:12). Moses was transformed from weakness to wonder because he surrendered to the Lord God (Heb. 11:24-26). Peter. Peter probably surprised himself as he heard his own words of denial when being questioned about his relationship with Jesus (Matt. 26:69-75). How could I have possibly been so weak after all He has done for me, Peter probably asked himself; then went out and wept over his weakness. But his rejection of Christ would soon be followed by the sorrow that leads to repentance (26:75) which made him useful in the Master’s hand (Mark 16:7). Only one man in history can lay claim to being the keynote speaker on the first day the gospel was ever preached, which resulted in the conversion of 3,000 people (Acts 2:14, 41). Peter. Why? Because he surrendered his very life to the Lord which allowed Jesus to make something strong even from weakness. God took 40 years training Moses to do His work. God turned Peter’s denial of Him into a determination that would not be stopped (Acts 4:19-20). God can use any person who truly surrenders to Him. HAVE YOU SURRENDERED ALL? dlf
