4. Meet Chris Van Allsburg Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 18, 1949 He enjoyed math and science in middle and high school. Became an A&D major at the University of Michigan and really did not know what that meant. Work diligently EVERYDAY while an art student Rhode Island School of Design. Married a third grade teacher. His first book was The Garden of Abdul Gasazi. He has written and illustrated 15 children’s books. He has received Caldecott Honor Medal for The Garden of Abdul Gasazi and two Caldecott Medals.
