DOLLY THE SHEEP AND HER FIRST LAMB CALLED BONNY Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) By Caroline Kim

What is SCNT? Somatic Cell  A somatic cell is any cell in the body other than the reproductive cells Nuclear  The nucleus is a membrane bound organelle found in eukaryotic cells that contains most of the cell’s genetic material Transfer  To move from one place to another

Stages of Fertilization

Embryonic Stem Cells

Cloning Most practical use of SCNT is to clone farm animals  Milk  Eggs  Meat  Pigs-organ donors

Dolly (6LL3) (July 5, 1996-February 14, 2003) First mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell through SCNT at Roslin Institute in Scotland The donor nucleus was not injected into the oocyte, but fused by an electric current DOLLY THE SHEEP AND HER FIRST LAMB CALLED BONNY

Dolly (6LL3) (July 5, 1996-February 14, 2003) Scientists at Roslin believe that Dolly died so young (6 years old) due to the age of the sheep she was cloned from (6 years old). Believed she may have been “old at birth”  Telomeres were shorter than expected for a sheep her age
