1 Hacking Bronte Rolling Hills 2006

2 Hacking is a way of releasing birds that have been hatched by humans. Scientists release 3 to 6 falcons into a hack box. People that do this must have a permit. When the birds get old enough they are let out of the hack box into the wild. When they first fly out they are uneasy. Once they fly out of the hack box they fly off to find their own territory.

3 Peregrines used to be endangered and are still a protected species. If a Peregrine gets lost after it is let out of a hack box the falconers can find it because on its foot there is something called a receiver attached to their leg, so the bird can be monitored. In about 3 to 4 weeks the receiver will fall off because the falcon will know by its instinct how to take care of itself.

4 People have started hacking falcons for their protection so others won't catch, kill, or hurt them. If that happens the Peregrine Falcons will become extinct.
