2. 1. “All the same you need an army— for hunting. Hunting pigs—” (Golding 32).

3. 2. “Ralph pushed back the tangle of hair that hung on his forehead” (34).

4. 3. “But this is a good island. We—Jack, Simon and me—climbed the mountain. It’s wizard. There’s food and drink, and—” “Rocks—” “Blue flowers—” (34).

5. 4. “At last Ralph induced him to hold the shell but by then the blow of laughter had taken away the child’s voice. Piggy knelt by him, one hand on the great shell, listening and interpreting to the assembly” (35).

6. 5. “He’s says the beastie came in the dark.” “Then he couldn’t see it!” (36)

7. 6. “Jack seized the conch” (36).

8. 7. “Ralph was annoyed and, for the moment, defeated. He felt himself facing something ungraspable. The eyes that looked so intently at him were without humor” (37).

9. After emphatically stating that they would eventually get rescued: 8. “He [Ralph] paused, the point made. The assembly was lifted toward safety by his words. They like and now respected him. Spontaneously they began to clap and presently the platform was loud with applause. Ralph flushed, looking sideways at Piggy’s open admiration, and then the other way at Jack who was smirking and showing that he too knew how to clap” (37).

10. After the kids run off to start a fire: 9. “Like kids!” he [Piggy] said scornfully. “Acting like a crowd of kids!” (38)

11. As Piggy, carrying the conch, approaches the boys: 10. Jack pointed suddenly. Piggy was surrounded before he could back away. “”Here—let me go!” His voice rose to a shriek of terror as Jack snatched the glasses off his face. “Mind out! Give ‘em back! I can’t hardly see! You’ll break the conch!” (40)

12. 11. Piggy glanced nervously into hell and cradled the conch (14).

13. 12. A pall stretched for miles away from the island. All the boys except Piggy started to giggle; presently they were shrieking with laughter (45).
