223—HAVE I DONE ANY GOOD BoM 16—Omni 1-Mosiah 2

There was a large stone brought unto him…(Omni 1:20) Stele (pronounced Sti li) are stone monuments erected for funerals or commemorative purposes found in many cultures. Some Stele that interest Mormon scholars are found in Izapa (modern-day Chiapas, Mexico).

Stela 5

What parallels can you see between what took place in Mosiah 2:1-9 and our modern-day General Conference?

Mosiah 2:1-9 -proclamation -people gathered to temple -great number -offered sacrifice -pitched tents towards temple -according to family -erected tower (broadcast system) -words written (Ensign) -don’t trifle—(to deal lightly or without due seriousness or respect)

Our Walk and Talk “For the next six months, your conference edition of the Ensign should stand next to your standard works and be referred to frequently. As my dear friend and brother Harold B. Lee said, we should let these conference addresses ‘be the guide to [our] walk and talk during the next six months. These are the important matters the Lord sees fit to reveal to this people in this day’” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1946, p. 68) (Ezra Taft Benson, “‘Come unto Christ, and Be Perfected in Him’,” Ensign, May 1988, 84).

D&C Video clip 12 “An Eye Single to the Glory of God” “Hey, kid, why are you doing this?”

Why???? Peruse Mosiah 2:14-27 looking for answers to the old man’s question: “why do we serve?”

Why???? Peruse Mosiah 2:14-27 looking for answers to the old man’s question: “why do we serve?” -v. 14) to ease other’s burdens -v. 15) to have a clear conscience -vv. 16-17) to serve God?? -vv. 19-21) to pay a debt to God -vv.22-24) to be blessed And…

Understanding Service “By serving and lifting others…we experience the only true and lasting happiness. Service is not something we endure on this earth so we can earn the right to live in the celestial kingdom. Service is the very fiber of which an exalted life in the celestial kingdom is made. “Knowing that service is what gives our Father in Heaven fulfillment, and knowing that we want to be where He is and as He is, why must we be commanded to serve one another? Oh, for the glorious day when these things all come naturally because of the purity of our hearts. In that day there will be no need for a commandment because we will have experienced for ourselves that we are truly happy only when we are engaged in unselfish service” (Marion G. Romney, Ensign, 11/82, 93).

The Doctrine of Happiness MOSIAH 2:41

Mosiah 2:41 2 Nephi 2:25, 27 Alma 41:5, 10-11 Alma 42:16 Helaman 13:38 Book of Mormon “Happy Scriptures”

“But in obedience, there is joy and peace unspotted, unalloyed: and as God has designed our happiness, and the happiness of all His creatures, He never has—and He never will—institute an ordinance or give a commandment to His people that is not calculated in its nature to promote that happiness which He has designed and which will not end in the greatest amount of good and glory to those who become the recipients of his law and ordinances” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 256). God designed our happiness

The Prophet Joseph said, “Happiness is the object and design of our existence; and will be the end thereof, if we pursue the path that leads to it. This path is virtue, uprightness, faithfulness, holiness, and keeping all the commandments of God.” (History of the Church, 5:134–35.) Path to Happiness

“Whatever our method, however, we should remember that our teaching, to be successful and effective, must convince our children that living the gospel is the way to happiness. If they feel that the discipline, attitudes, and practices to which they are subject are arbitrary, that without reason they restrict their activities and keep them from enjoying life, they will conform only so long as we have them under our immediate influence” (Marion G. Romney, “Let Us Set in Order Our Own Houses,” Ensign, Jan 1985, 3). Teach Happiness
