3  Federica García Lorca was born on June 5, 1898, in Fuente Vaqueros, Spain. Lorca started his career in 1919 in Madrid, where he met Salvador Dalí. Dalí helped Lorca with his first play, Mariana Pineda. Most of his inspiration came from his hometown. His two most successful poetry collections were Canciones (Songs) 1927 and Romancero Gritano (The Gypsy Ballads) 1928. Later in the 1930’s, Lorca had spent most of his time writing plays such as Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba. Unfortunately in 1936, the Spanish Civil War had broken out and Lorca was caught in the middle of the conflict. On August 19, 1936, he was executed without a trial by supporters of General Francisco Franco in Granada, Spain. Lorca still remains one of the most famous poets and dramatists of Spain. 6   The guitar is compared to a person who is depressed and crying because their heart was played with.  Lorca personifies the guitar by saying it cries.  The guitar cannot stop playing which represents how someone cannot stop crying.  He repeats this three times on lines 7, 9, and 15.  Lorca then says that the guitar cries just like how it rains down and how the wind blows in a snowy day.  The guitar cries for the things it wants to have but cannot obtain.  The poem then says that it wants to be where the ‘warm southern sands’ are and where the ‘white camellias’ are.  Lorca is referring to the southern region of Spain called Andalusia. 7   Then he says that the guitar grieves for arrows without targets and evenings without morning.  These two lines are metaphors of the person’s confusion.  “And the first bird dead / Upon a branch.”  Lorca uses strong imagery to show the guitar’s grief.  The final two lines gives us a very interesting metaphor.  “A wounded heart / Wounded by five swords.”  The guitar itself is roughly the shape of a heart!  The five swords are the five fingers that play the guitar!  This metaphor can also be related to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents the love and compassion towards humanity but it is also wounded by their grief. Interpretation Time! (Continuation)

¡Oh guitarra! Corazón malherido por cinco espadas. 5 10 15 20 25 Original Version  The Spanish version of The Guitar is called La Guitarra.  It has an abnormal rhyme scheme and the meter isn’t consistent.  Some translations:  Llanto = wail or cry  Madrugada = morning or dawn  Arena = sand  Flecha = arrow  Pájaro = bird  Malherido = wounded  Espadas = swords ABCBABBDBEBABDBCCFCABABBACABCBABBDBEBABDBCCFCABABBAC
