2 © ABB Ltd - Page 2 JB 010707 OPC Server Overview Used to communicate to an operator interface and other applications that need data Makes it possible for any OPC Client to read data from the controller The MMS Server is the ”Switchboard” between Control Builder, Controllers and the OPC Server Handles read/write operations Supported standards OPC Data Access, OPC DA Meets 1.0 A and 2.0 OPC Specification OPC Alarm & Event, OPC A&E (In future release) Meets 1.0.2 Alarm & Event OPC Specification In addition it provides its own alarm and event attributes

3 © ABB Ltd - Page 3 JB 010707 Alarm & Event OPC Server (in future) The Controllers alerts the OPC Server when a application change is made Then the server starts an “alarm summary” and refresh both itself and the subscribing OPC client Class is an ABB attribute that allows the user to sort and classify alarms according to different process locations Thereby allowing critical process areas to be put under closer surveillance. The AutoDisable is attribute from ABB that comes with the OPC Alarm and Event Server software The alarm disable itself after it has given alarm Off and On a few times e.g. unstable conditions out in the process and not being reset by the operator Once the alarm has been activated and presented on the operator’s monitor, it won’t keep filling the screen and/or sending event designated printouts

4 © ABB Ltd - Page 4 JB 010707 Easy configuration You do not need to care about OPC Support when you write application Just start the OPC Server and connect it using the IP-address of the controller The OPC Server detects any changes in the control program and updates it self Every 20 seconds, the OPC Server asks the connected controllers for their current versions

5 © ABB Ltd - Page 5 JB 010707 OPC Server Performance The OPC server has no built-in limitations in number of controllers, OPC clients or items The performance depends on the amount of the MMS traffic between the server and the controllers This in turn depends on the number of items and the rate at which the items are updated in the OPC server The following information is based upon an OPC Server running on a PC with a processor type Pentium III, 550 MHz and with 256 MB RAM. ~12000 OPC items with an update rate of 1 second E.g. one OPC Client can subscribe to 12000 items or 4 OPC clients can subscribe to 3000 items each The performance also depends on the controllers ability to provide the OPC server with variable values The values are based on an update rate of 1.0 s
