7 Markups (Finding a Wholesale Price) Luke buys Nike sneakers from Modell’s for $50.00. Modell’s marked up the price of the sneakers by 90%. What is the wholesale price of the sneakers? Retail price = Wholesale price + Markup = 50 + (90% · x) =1x+0.90x = 1.9x x 50 50 1.9x 1.9x = x$26.32

8 Markups (Finding a Wholesale Price) A furniture store marks up the wholesale price of a lamp by 80%. The retail price is $35. What is the wholesale price? Retail price = Wholesale price + Markup = 35 + (80% · x) =1x+0.80x = 1.8x x 35 35 1.8x 1.8x = x$19.44

9 Discounts (Finding the Original Price) You buy a DVD player on sale for $150. The sale was for 25% off. What is the original price? Sale price = Original price – Discount = 150 – (25% · x) =1x–0.25x = 0.75x x 150 150 0.75x 0.75x = x$200

10 Discounts (Finding the Original Price) Mark buys a suit on sale for $144. The suit is on sale for 20% off. What was the original price of the suit? Sale price = Original price – Discount = 144 – (20% · x) =1x–0.20x = 0.80x x 144 144 0.80x 0.80x = x$180
