1 In Present Day Australia PENTECOSTALISM

2 Background of Australian Pentecostalism Founded in Australia by Janet Lancaster in North Melbourne Church was named the ‘Good News Hall’ Evangelists from England, Africa and America spread the word-set up 16 assemblies across Australia by 1927 Pentecostalism is the fastest growing Christian denomination, however it has the lowest variant loyalty

3 General practices and beliefs Pentecostalism places special emphasis on the Spiritual Gifts and spiritual baptism Evangelical system-emphasising the reliability of the bible and the transformation of human life through faith in Jesus Belief in the original ‘infallible’ languages of the bible-for this reason a large amount of Pentecostals speak in tongues when they are ‘divinely inspired’ Baptism is by full submersion which emphasises the way the spirit ‘fills’ an individual Spiritual Gifts are received as a gift from baptism-allows the spirit to give the gifts of tongues etc. Pentecostalism places large belief in prophecy, tongues and spiritual healing

4 General Patterns of Organisation Pentecostalism is the fastest growing Christian denomination in Australia (grown by 12.6% at the 2006 census from the previous census in 2001) It, however has the largest rate of ‘outflow’ due to low denominational loyalty-this may be due to the failure to fulfil an individual’s needs in a religious tradition’
