2 LaMarck (French Biologist, 1809) Inheritance of Acquired characteristics: Characteristics an organism develops through use and disuse could be passed on to its offspring Theory of Use and Disuse: the more a part is used, the stronger and better developed it becomes; the less a part is used, the weaker and less developed it becomes.

3 LaMarck’s Way Giraffes had short Necks So they stretched their necks to reach food Their necks got longer (acquired characteristic) Their offspring were born with long necks (inheritance of acquired characteristic)

4 Weismann Cut off tails of mice Offspring born with tails Acquired Characteristics are not inherited
